Kilborn Place seminary purchase approved

Staff Reporter, Ottawa Citizen
Published Sep 13, 2023 • 1 minute read

City council has approved the $18.5-million plan to buy a former seminary in Alta Vista that the City of Ottawa plans to convert into supportive housing.

The enormous Diocesan Centre at 1245-1247 Kilborn Place sits on 8.7 acres of land that the city hopes will eventually be developed for mixed use. The property was acquired in a private sale from the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Ottawa.

The building has 100 rooms that once housed priests, but it has been empty since 2019 and was most recently used for office space. The massive structure, nearly as long as Centre Block on Parliament Hill, was designed by Ottawa architect Auguste Martineau, and it opened in 1957.

The full cost of the site cleanup and conversion is not yet known.

Partners selected for new mixed-use, mixed-income housing at 1245 Kilborn Place

City of Ottawa
Published on May 4, 2026

Ottawa Community Housing and the Ottawa Supportive Housing Network, together with Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation and Nesting Ground, have been selected to collaborate with the City to advance the planning for 1245 Kilborn Place.

Located in Ottawa’s Alta Vista neighbourhood, 1245 Kilborn Place was purchased in 2023 with the goal to broaden the housing types and services available. The vision for the site includes a mix of affordable, market and supportive housing units, a range of health, community and social services and a public park to benefit both new residents and the wider community.

Along with the team of housing providers who have been selected as partners through a public Request for Offers process, the South East Ottawa Community Health Centre will also contribute to planning for the site to integrate housing and health services.

The City will be working with these partners through a collaborative process to prepare and deliver a Concept Plan and Implementation Plan. There will be further opportunities for community members to review and provide feedback on the plan as it evolves.
Attend the community information session

An in-person community information session will be held to meet the partners and to provide updates on next steps for this initiative:

Location: In-person at Jim Durrell Community Centre, Ellwood Room
Date: Thursday, June 11, 2026
Time: 6:30 to 8 pm

Painfully slow. They could have done a quick reno to make the existing building available for housing while the rest was being planned.
