Rather, doesn't Sources of the Self begin from the premise that identity doesn't radiate outwards from a self defined primarily in opposition to others, but is rather based on participation in a community oriented around shared notions of the good?

Such a shared ethos may, of course, be formed and articulated by way of contrast with some other community. But that doesn't mean the ethos has to be xenophobic. Just think of Pericles' famous line from the Funeral Oration, defining the Athenians by contrast to the Spartans:

"We differ from our enemies in this: we throw our city open to the world."
διαφέρομεν δὲ καὶ... τῶν ἐναντίων τοῖσδε. τήν τε γὰρ πόλιν κοινὴν παρέχομεν.
I actually don't think we're that far apart.

I wasn't actually thinking of xenophobia in the usual definition, which is of course unanimous viewed as a terrible moral flaw. I was thinking of it in a higher level meaning of people's tendency to form in-groups, which by their very nature necessitates the existence of out-groups as an opposite to that. Perhaps "xenophobia" is not the exact, correct term for this, but I think every in-group has at least a little bit of whatever xenophobia truly is, even if in some cases it's an extremely mild, benign variant of it.

I also feel quite strongly that even if we were to break down differences XYZ between groups, that not soon after new differences ABC would inevitably spring up.

Also, the USA is probably one of the best examples in human history of a population that has a very high degree of in-group cohesiveness on an international level on the one hand, but which is extremely polarized internally between a multitude of in-groups that are often very hostile to one another.

Murders fall between Jan-Set 2021 in Brazil

It's a 4.7% fall compared to the same period on the last year, although numbers rose in Aug and Sep and are above 2020.

So far 30,954 "violent deaths" were registered (41k? till the end of the year, for a 20/100,000 rate).

According to the article, on the most violent states, drug traffic and related disputes take account for over 80% of deaths.

That's because they've made a culture of isolating themselves from others.

Anyway, this is all very presentist and whiggish. Rules are necessary but not sufficient conditions for government (games have rules but aren't governments). Limits are necessary but not sufficient conditions for borders (my mom used to tell me not to cross such-and-such street but that failed to establish a border).

So is your point still that modern state borders are unnatural or illegitimate?

why wouldn't it be? it's the international world mixed into one country.

Well, its cold as shit in Chicago now. I expect the 2-3 murders a day to dramatically drop.

I was walking my dog today thinking about how hard it would be to even shoot a gun in this weather. Horribly strong winds, freezing, and your "opps" are probably bundled at home like everyone else.

You need to dress accordingly. Never mind the opps and find a random victim.

Louisville, KY is experiencing an unprecedented level of violence. They just had their 174th homicide breaking a previous record set last year and at this pace could top 200 homicides before the end of 2021.

Anyway, this is all very presentist and whiggish. Rules are necessary but not sufficient conditions for government (games have rules but aren't governments). Limits are necessary but not sufficient conditions for borders (my mom used to tell me not to cross such-and-such street but that failed to establish a border).
That makes sense on a blank slate level, but using your very examples:

-If you and your friends where playing monopoly and you stole your friends properties he/she'd call you out on it. Your friend = government

-If you did cross such-n-such street, your mom most likely grounded you or made you face punative action. Your mom = government.

We think of "government" or "the state" as being black helicopters, court buildings, massive beauocracies and the like but when you really look at it on an anthopoligcal level the massive state apparatices we know today are the direct decendants of cheiftan-tribual systems of yore. Yes, it's true that the advent of agriculture led to the notion of property rights as we understand it (I would argue property rights exist in hunter gatherer societies as well but that's going deeper than an SSP post can go) and thus the formation of territory based notions of identity/nationhood and the attendant organized states that grew from that. But one can argue that for true stateless society to exist one first has to define what a state "is", and I've never gotten a satisfactory answer to that. If someone can tell me "no" and enforce that no then to me the seeds of a state are already being sown.

Another Midwest city, another homicide record. Indianapolis just tied its all-time record with 245 homicides in 2021. There were 245 homicides in all of 2020.

Columbus also set a new record with 178 homicides.

i’ve always thought of louisville as a smaller, friendlier, (more southern of course but related) more chill st. louis so thats very disheartening.

Portland is up to 77 homicides, of which 6 or 7 will end up classified as 'justified.' Each new case adds to the all-time record, and has since #70. It seems like quite a few cities are setting records this year in the US. Tucson has at least 90 cases so far, compared to the old record of 79.
