Jamestown seeks public input on future of Buckhead Atlanta

https://www.reporternewspapers.net/2...khead-atlanta/

Quote:
The high-end retail, office and housing complex known as The Shops Buckhead Atlanta has yet another new owner – the mastermind of Ponce City Market — who is seeking community input on the property’s future through “town halls” and an online survey.

The acquisition by Jamestown, an Atlanta-based real estate firm known as the developer of the Old Fourth Ward’s Ponce City Market, has been in the works for months and officially announced July 18. The first “town hall” will be held July 23 at The Shops, located along Peachtree Road between East Paces Ferry and Pharr roads. To register for the meeting, see the website here. The online survey is available here.

The survey indicates that Jamestown is rethinking the retail mix at the sometimes struggling Shops. As for the complex’s name, which has changed frequently and is widely criticized as confusing, Jamestown spokesperson Fallon McLoughlin said it’s “too early to say” whether another rebranding could happen.

People still shop (in person) when they are "eventized" so-to-speak. Like when they are on vacation, or when they are somewhere special, when they want a keepsake, when it's a holiday, special occasion, etc. So I would think Jamestown needs to create enough reasons to attract people to the area that aren't shops to get them to go to the shops and make purchases. Fill them with the consumer spirit with eats, drinks, trendy sights, experiential offerings, etc. and the shops will do fine.

Buckhead’s ‘The Shops’ should cater to local shoppers, name change planned

Smart move by Jamestown.
Quote:
A public meeting hosted by the new owners of The Shops Buckhead Atlanta was held July 23 to garner input on the troubled retail, office and housing complex, and what its future might look like. The “town hall” at the complex was attended by at least 200 local residents, who voiced concerns on everything from crime to parking to affordability.

And The Shops eventually will be renamed yet again, for the fifth time in its 12-year history, the new owner says.

“We don’t want to make this another PCM. We want it to be the Main Street it needs to be,” Phillips said, adding, “We want to add a contextual relationship to the streetscape, and warm it up a little bit, and make it feel a little more like a place in the center of the city.”

Buckhead Atlanta was a stupid name that could easily be confused with the entire Buckhead Atlanta area.

If a visitor in Buckhead pulled up to a pedestrian and asked the average Joe Blockhead where was Buckhead Atlanta. The reply might be: you're in it.

Imagine if a shopping center in the Houston Medical Center was named Houston Medical Center. You'd be confused.

Just rename the damn thing The Shops at Buckhead Village.

Your attempts at rebranding failed miserably - Ray Lewis, the boogie man, is not coming back!

Cipriani private club, hotel and condos planned for Buckhead

https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/..._news_headline
Quote:
The more than 3-acre development would include 54 condo units, a 125-room hotel and the private club with amenities such as spa services, high-end restaurants, fitness facilities and recreation spaces. The project could also offer a tailor shop and other retail space.

The developer is Joachim Ohlin, according to a source familiar with the deal.

Cipriani operates restaurants across the globe from Las Vegas to Moscow.

WhatNowAtlanta has a video and a crude sketch rendering of the project.

While the design is at least a bit different than other Buckhead developments, the street presence is horrendous. Looks to be car-centric.

I agree with what you're saying but you do have to take into account that this is a private members only development

I don’t disagree. That said, east Andres and east paces ferry is essentially the first block of what will be mixed use for the neighborhood. The regions bank should have been mixed use instead of the waste of land that it is now from an urban fabric perspective, but everything west of that I expect will remain SFH. A more engaging street presence would be great, but I think a general pocket park at the corner of the neighborhood may be fitting, too. Shops will remain to the north and east. Density will not be coming from the west. Will likely see some growth to the south, too.

May Need Some Tweaking - But Not too Bad

Although the jury is still out on the over-all design, I actually like the fact that they incorporated some surrounding greenspace (although small) and included a courtyard style feature in the design.

Every development does not have to be right up against the street with just another monotonous swath of shops and cookie-cutter streetscape template.

This site design, with the greenspace elements, seems a little more suited to the area given the predominate surroundings.

Worth noting, there is a cute home converted to a restaurant currently on site. Not sure about the date of construction of the home, although it is charming.

Cipriani says it has no plans for Atlanta

The ABC has updated their fake news story:
Quote:
“There was a conversation many years ago but we had decided that we were not interested," said a spokeswoman for Cipriani Group.

Not surprising. This is a small chain of restaurants - not a developer.
