i think this is going to be a beautiful tower. for selfish reasons i thought SOM's proposal was far superior, but what we got will be great. the terminal is another story...

I also liked the idea of the SOM tower, but I think it was just too dominant and almost looked scary. The Pelli design is charismatic and subtle at the same time, even at 1070 ft.

I sort of mentioned this before: I would have been even more severely disappointed if SOM had to reduce their design to 970 feet maximum height to the top of main building to clear from casting shadows on Union Square, if they had won the competition instead of Pelli Clark Pelli. I wish San Francisco didn't have to worry about shadows on public open spaces so much, but the shadow ordinance was voted into being as a good overall protection against buildings being too tall in the city for a seemingly good cause. NIMBY's found an effective answer. Heights of several of the tallest building proposals around Transbay Terminal were reduced in scale to the Salesforce Tower shortening as a result. I am still relatively happy with what San Francisco is ending up getting, though.

I wanted to add ( as a show of support ), that this was my favorite design. They were all good, but this one ( I felt ) was a modern nod to the pyramid. Even though it will be the tallest, it's still cohesive, rather than trying too hard to be the star of the skyline.

Totally agree. I just think Salesforce Tower looks less striking than the SOM tower in renderings. However when you look at the SF skyline holistically, the Pelli design is the perfect centerpiece. IMHO I also got a bit of an evil lair vibe from the SOM design too. However I think there was one design that literally looked like it could pass as the eye of sauron...

Ah here it is:

^^^^^ lol. Oh god thanks for reminding us what of we could have had. Actually it had no chance of being approved. I too was enamored with SOM's design at first and disappointed with the choice even though I'm a fan of Pelli's work. It's hard to really tell what the finished product would have like though because it most certainty would have been reduced in height. Of the two, Pelli's design I think lends itself better to height manipulation and refinement.

Ah here it is:

I think you are mistaken. The one you posted was the Rogers-Forest City design. The SOM design was this one:

If you read my sentence carefully, I wasn't referencing the SOM design. I was talking about the SOM design then mentioned the other design tangentially.

^^that's the best rendering Ive seen of it. Ive always liked the Pelli design, but that one is a bit more daring. Maybe the next boom cycle they can resurrect it...

I doubt anything over 1,000' will be proposed or built in Sf in the next 20 years.

I never thought we'd see SF Tower! Stranger things have happened. If people turn out to appreciate the soaring new height and design of our tallest tower, more could reasonably follow in the next boom cycle the previous poster mentioned.

When it becomes clear there is a need to build more buildings 800 to 1000 feet or even taller after most of what we know of proposed is completed, then it may happen. I'm not sure when or where this can happen, since shadow concerns on public open spaces usually seems to be such a limiting factor in San Francisco. If the need grow taller eventually becomes too great, I wonder if more exceptions will be made.
