Here's yet another snapshot from eBay. (from the same seller as the four photographs I previously posted this week)

It shows a sleek tear-drop car design.

. .and here's the writing on the back.

It's what the writing on the back says it is:

Just sitting in a parking lot back in the day. Two and a half million bucks of car now.

Cheers,

I thought it was a car design competition. . .not the name of the car.

Here's a Duesenberg in Westwood in June 1955.

So. .um. .. .(I'm trying not to ask another stupid question). .how old was this Duesenberg in 1955?.. It looks old compared to the other cars.

My guess would be a 1930 Model J. I could be wrong.

Cheers,

I concur. Bohman & Schwartz were Pasadena-based coachbuilders who were in business from 1932 to 1947 (after which they went their separate ways, but continued in the trade). That said, they didn't always customize new cars, so the Duesenberg J may be slightly earlier. Note that this one has suicide doors at the front and regular doors at the rear, whereas some were the other way around like modern Rolls-Royce Phantoms. While not quite as expensive as a Delahaye Compétition, it would probably still be worth around $1 million today.

Thanks, I really like this photo that I haven't seen before! Do you know when it was taken? His restaurant opened in 1945 (he'd already been doing his radio show for years in other locations) and since there's a lot of red, white and blue bunting I'd assume this was taken that year.

On the awning, it also looks like "Tom Breneman's Hollywood" is covering up some other lettering that had been on it... something Cafe...
___

The extremely popular radio show, Breneman's "Breakfast in Hollywood," had a movie made about it that I watched one time to see what it might've been like. Seems like Breneman had a lot of charisma. A lot of prizes were given away during the broadcast and I'm wondering if that was to entice people to come there because it apparently was broadcast live. In the film he asks a lady what time she got up to be there and she says "4 a.m." He replies, "Sucker."

I am assuming this photo (above) may have been taken in the wee hours of the morning?

A daily bit was to find out who the oldest person in the audience was. Another was who is from a place the furthest away from Hollywood. Also, who's wearing the "ugliest" hat in the room. The movie has a whole section about that. Zasu Pitts plays a character who kept returning trying to be the one with the ugliest hat. This day she's about to have that honor bestowed on her until Breneman see's Hedda Hopper in the audience. Then there follows an amusing song titled "A Hat for Hedda Hopper," which there's a youtube link to:

Welp, my interest has been piqued. I must see this movie.

Hmmmm. "Hollywood Tropics Cafe," perhaps?

In Manhattan Beach it predates the WPA. I think the same is true for Hermosa Beach. Here's a photo from the 1920s looking south along the Strand in Manhattan Beach from 10th Street.

Same era, looking north along the Strand in Manhattan Beach from 3rd Street. Note the Pacific Electric tracks just a few feet away.

The house closes to the lens still stands pretty much unchanged.

This slide is dated 1959, and is courtesy curbsideclassic.com, no location provided.....initially I assumed this had to be in the city....

But now I'm not so sure....we have plenty of clues to work with: the Advanced station, Bob & George's Chevron, the market.....I ran all these places in late '50's phone books for the Central and Western areas, nothing turned up.

There were a handful of Gateway Market locations in the Central book, none is a match for the photo....

The street lamps certainly appear to be consistent with others found in the city, to me that was a big clue.....this one was at Pico & Victoria, from the DWP archives....

A Twitter user says it's Valley Blvd. and S. 5th Street in Alhambra in this tweet from last year -

https://twitter.com/teddunne/status/1376389027591507973

The street sign in the vintage picture does say "Valley" and the old Gateway building looks right in the present day view.

Google Street View

I think this is how it lines up on a 1960 aerial -

The Gateway Market arrowed blue, the Advanced station in the red circle, and Bob & George's in the green.

Noir Noir, I never saw the Valley Blvd. street sign, my eye completely missed it as it blended into the Chevron station.

Sometimes I think this forum is on a mission to locate every old bar in the city, here's one that I believe is new to us.....from 1955's "No Man's Woman", a crime picture starring the noir queen Marie Windsor....

This police cruiser is headed south on Normandie and turns right on 8th St. (I believe the radio tower in the distance is one of two that were atop the E.L. Cord auto dealership at Wilshire and Mariposa)....

Just after making the turn we get a brief look at the Aloha Isle....

.....which was at 3303 W. 8th St.....

Also in the brief exterior sequence is an ambulance turning a corner onto a one-way street, I assume this is downtown but I could not i.d. this intersection...

The film has a few other exteriors, including some nice footage of Westwood Village....the picture is here, the above sequence starts at 1:10:06.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLiw...channel=ChrisT
