My source has re-iterated that the Micron deal south of Lockhart is a done deal. Curious why Micron has not applied for the same subsidies from the ISD's and the State (maybe they have)....but I also think this might have something to do with it.

Yep, I think Micron-Lockhart gets announced right after this gets passed, as a thank you to Cornyn and McCaul.

‘Golden age’ or 'kind of scary'? Taylor residents grapple with idea of huge Samsung expansion

https://www.statesman.com/story/busi...n/65379879007/

According to documents filed with the state, Samsung is considering building 11 more chipmaking facilities in the Austin area in the next 20 years in what could be the biggest economic investment in Central Texas history. The technology giant's tentative plans include building nine of the facilities in Taylor, creating an estimated 8,200 jobs and bringing in $167.6 billion in investment.

The applications Samsung filed with the Taylor and Manor school districts seeking tax breaks haven’t been approved, and the company has made no guarantees that it will follow through on building all the facilities. Samsung says it is also considering other sites outside of Texas for the fabs.

Residents are trying to wrap their heads around the idea of Taylor landing such huge investment from Samsung. While they might welcome the job opportunities and growth potential it would bring, some say they are worried that Taylor would be fundamentally changed by the projects.

In the unlikely situation where Samsung builds all these factories instead of 1-2 more, where is all the water coming from?

Read somewhere they may run a pipe from Alcoa. Not sure if this is enough for a dozen fabs.

It's somewhat surprising that so many water intensive fabs are located or planned for often water challenged areas like Phoenix and Texas.

Seems they are currently focused on their Boise op's trying to secure 1.8b for expansion. Without CHIPS passing they claim it won't happen. Hard to see them also investing 40b in Lockhart when they're worried about securing 1.8b for Boise.

Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.

I worked on a project about 20 years ago where they began the plan to use the aquifer to help supply water to the estimated 1.5+ million people expected to live within a few miles of the (then under construction) SH-130 Toll corridor.

CHIPS passed the Senate, and is on the House. I assume it will pass there, since it's a Dem priority, and head to Biden's desk for signature.

Not really surprising. Water is much, much easier to source than talent.

Defense tech giant BAE Systems to move key aviation unit to Austin, add 100 jobs

https://www.statesman.com/story/busi...n/65391286007/

Aerospace and defense technology giant BAE Systems is moving key programs from its control and avionics solutions unit to Austin, with plans to hire 100 people to support the business in the next year.

BAE Systems' latest move is part of the company's plan to significantly grow its Austin presence. BAE Systems — which is based in Arlington, Va., and is a subsidiary of UK-based BAESystems plc. — announced in 2020 that it was moving to a new $150 million campus in the Parmer Austin Business Park and planned to double its 700-person Austin staff with hiring across a variety of its divisions. They seem to have a lot of job openings locally that look to be fairly well paid and requiring a certain level of technical skill or knowledge of military systems.

San Marcos film studio gains 'The Mandalorian' special effects technology

Construction is set to begin in early 2023

https://www.mysanantonio.com/busines...s-17391765.php

The "largest and most ambitious film studio ever brought to Texas," has found its video production company. Hill Country Studios, the multi-million state-of-the-art movie studio, in San Marcos will partner with Houston-based video production company, VISION, according to a news release.

"We're thrilled to join Hill Country Studios in bringing the next generation of film and television to Texas," said VISION CEO Josh Beard in a release. "Our team is eager to establish Hill Country as a go-to LED Volume operation for major motion picture and video projects, which will drive innovation and advance talent in the field of Virtual Production."

VISION will design, install, and maintain LED-wall stage technology, named "LED Volume," in two stage spaces. The two virtual production stages will be among the largest in North America, according to the release.

LED Volumes are replacing traditional green screens for special effects. The technology was used in The Batman, HBO's Westworld, and Disney's The Mandolorian.

"From day one, we knew that Hill Country Studios was going to be one of the most cutting-edge film studios in North America and a facility that moves the industry forward," said co-founder and CEO of Hill Country Studios Cory McLoud in the release. "To build a Tier One facility, you need Tier One talent. That’s why we’ve partnered with VISION to bring world-class digital production technology to Texas and beyond."

San Marcos City Council approved the Chapter 380 Economic Development Incentive agreement with Hill Country Group LLC for the development of a $267 million, 820,000-square-foot film studio, according to a MySA report. In June, Protect the River organization protested at city hall to get the city to reconsider the tax incentive deal. City council did bring the item up at a July meeting, but after a lengthy conversation, no changes were made, according to a MySA report.

The movie studio will be on the La Cima property. It will have the two virtual production stages, 12 sound stages, infrastructure and amenities. Hill Country Studios is set to begin construction in early 2023, the release says.

Skybox, Prologis buy 200-plus acres outside Austin for data center campus

Quote:
More than 200 acres along a desirable stretch of highway in Hutto is set to be transformed into a large data center campus as officials continue to push for development of a "technology superhighway" in Williamson County north of Ausin.

Dallas-based Skybox Datacenters LLC and its partner, San Francisco-based Prologis Inc., acknowledged Aug. 23 that they have purchased 221 acres from the city of Hutto along U.S. Route 79, where they plan to build a "world class" collection of data centers. The land is in what's known as Hutto's "megasite," a huge but undeveloped tract where big businesses could land.

An entity called Hutto Data Center Campus LLC on Aug. 9 purchased three tracts totaling 159 acres, according to county records. That entity is tied to a Denver address that is associated with Prologis (Nasdaq: PLD), a giant real estate investment trust focused on logistics. Prologis Logistics Services Inc. itself acquired an adjacent 62 acres on the same day.

Micron's possible Lockhart project finally getting some coverage:

Micron's plans for potential $80B semiconductor factory near Lockhart unveiled in incentives applications
Company says it hasn't 'made any final decisions regarding the location, timing or scope of any expansion plans'

Quote:
Nearly a year after Central Texas was announced as the site for a "once-in-a-generation" semiconductor factory, another one is being planned for the region.

In documents made public Aug. 24, Boise, Idaho-based Micron Technology Inc. revealed it could build a massive, eight-phased fabrication facility near Lockhart, a city about 35 miles southeast of Austin with a population of roughly 15,000 and a reputation as the barbecue capital of Texas.

Dubbed "Project Evergreen," the project has a minimum qualified investment of at least $80 billion. Incentives applications also pledge at least 80 jobs, although that represents the minimum required through the state's Chapter 313 program. If the company proceeds with the project, the job total would likely be much higher.

The facility would be located within a proposed reinvestment zone in Caldwell County and Lockhart Independent School District located in northern Caldwell County northwest of Lockhart. Construction on the first phase would start in January 2023 and commence operations by the end of December 2026, according to the documents.
