I thought I would try and locate an interior view of the Melrose Tavern. .and this is what I found.

Customers in Melrose Tavern bar, Hollywood.

The bar was around much earlier than I thought because this looks like the 1940s!
At first I thought it might be a different Melrose Tavern - but it has the same address. (5657 Melrose Ave,)

Here's the description at the Huntington Archives.

[I]View of the interior of the Melrose Tavern bar in Hollywood, California. Customers are in seats and at the bar with drinks.
Notes
Title devised by cataloger based on writing on sleeve in which negative was received: "Melrose Tavern." Date determined by similar image with World War II bonds poster on wall.
\The address of the Melrose Tavern was 5657 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood.

Please write if you recognize one of these buildings by its architectural design and appearance:

1.

This in-game building is adjacent to the Los Angeles Prison.

2.

The location of this property is close to the rodeo fashion street parody and santa monica pier

3

Such a building in the game is very close to the Rodeo.

4

It could be east Los Angeles closer to downtown. The name of the building is fictitious, but for sure a similar font could be used in such a real building, and the tiled wall covering is remarkable. I thought it was a famous Beverly Hills hotel, but I didn't find such a tile there.

5.

This is presumably a hotel overlooking santa monica beach with distinctive blue waves on the façade.

This is the late, lamented Olympia Medical Center at 5900 W Olympic Bl right across the street from my office.

The 1921 CD lists a cameraman named Reginald E Lyons living at 4320 Kingswell. I couldn't see any businesses in his name. I skipped a few CDs and found him at 7538 Hampton Avenue in 1925 (listed as a photographer). In 1933, he's listed as a studioworker, and in 1939 he's married to Isabel with the address changed slightly to 7540 Hampton Avenue. The last CD I checked was 1942, by which time he's listed as a guard living at 820 N Vista. I assume he has the same wife, although the spelling has changed to Isabele.

I see Reggie had a brother (Edgar Lyons) who was also a cameraman...He was married to Violet Schram and died in Hollywood, April 4, 1950, at age 50.

Reggie died Sept. 10, 1966, at age 77.

Reginald Lyons filmography as a photographer

This is a film where he starred as one of the actors, if you trust the information from the websites I have listed.

There is a chance that this is him in the 1916 photo.

The Reggie Lyons snapshot reminded of other 'former-album' snapshots I have in my. .um. .archives. I've finally decided to post some of them.

The albums and scrapbooks pages belonged to a relatively unknown actor from Denmark, Carl Neubert.

Here's the seller's description:

Personal scrapbook page of Carl Neubert. Mr. Neubert was born in Denmark in 1907. He was an actor that appeared in Catman of Paris.

Later on, he moved to Hollywood, California. He was married to Ruth Warrick twice among others. He eventually became an Interior Designer with his own store in Hollywood.

He was well known in the social circles for decades. Friendships with major Hollywood stars were numerous. Some different candid scenes of people, cars, and scenery in California.

This find is quite amazing. It is his personal scrapbook page with pictures of him and his friends through his younger years. It looks to have been in 1930s when Carl first moved to Hollywood after being an actor in Europe. Some of the pictures have written descriptions of the scene and people.

Let's start with a snapshot of Mr. Neubert, himself.

eBay

This close-up is much clearer.

I find the most intriguing snapshots are of his expat friends. . .like the one below.

Luckily, their names are written on back.

eBay

This next snapshot appears to show a friend who works at Universal as a ?

eBay

ebay

As you can see the writing is in English and. . .Danish?.... . .Swedish?

I hope we can find additional information on some of these expats. I imagine at least a few of them worked in the movie industry.

More to come. ..

Here's one more for tonight.

eBay

Their names and an address is on the back.

Sam Pike looks like a man before his time. His haircut foreshadows the L.A. Punk Scene by 50 years! (I'm not sure what is going on behind his head)

To get an idea of how many photographs are in Neubert's collection look at this one eBay page. (and this is only some of the snapshots)

Appears to intend something on the order of "kendt vekselerer og teatermaend," alias something like "[Well-] known financier and theater man." "Entrepreneur," perhaps? Even "Producer"?

mystery location.

Seller's description:.. "Vtg 1964 The Discovery Inn Restaurant In Mountain Los Angeles CA"

eBay

It seems vaguely familiar to me. . . .perhaps in Benedict Canyon..or.. Coldwater Canyon.

Here's your closer look.

detail

I'm intrigued by the remnant of a brick pillar (or chimney) in the upper left corner. -also note the arrow on a pole and the old streetlight.

A 1973 article in the New York Times says the following on the Discovery Inn:
Health food restaurants are another local specialty; we like the Discovery Inn, 156 South Topanga Canyon Boulevard; the canyon has long been a better places to shop for handcrafts. Among the specialities at the Discovery Inn are the Swinger, a kind of super hamburger filled with vegetables, and chicken Florentine. The owners bike whole wheat ions and cheesecake daily. Complete dinners are about $4.50. Reservations are necessary. (Phone 455-9079.)
Meanwhile, a 2003 LAT article contains this:
Soon, Darrell [Hazen] was placing stuffed vultures and glow-in-the dark hunchbacks around the funky exterior of Hidden Treasures, his rambling store in Topanga Canyon.

...

In the 1960s, the store was the site of the Discovery Inn, a restaurant and gathering place for Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and other artists who made up Topanga’s thriving music scene.
Hidden Treasures is still at 154 S Topanga Canyon Boulevard, and looks like a funky place, but the building doesn't resemble the one in e_r's picture.

Your insight led me to another photograph.

This is how the Discovery Inn looked in 1964. (it opened in 1961)

Thanks HossC!

A few months back I happened upon this item on eBay.

I've sat and stared at this thing for time eternal (two months) and still can't figure out what's going on.

mystery location.

It's obviously in the Los Angeles area because of the 'See Los Angeles from the Air' sign on the little hut-like building.

ethereal_reality_archives

I had this filed with photographs from the Hemet area. (that might not mean anything. .but at least it's a clue, albeit a small one)

Ciro's recreation

I don't know what the upcoming "Being the Ricardos" (about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) will be like, but at the very least we'll get to experience Ciro's in all its glory.
