What a dumb and short-sighted article. Being close to 150k people in Kanata is probably worse than being in the geographical centre of a city of 1.4 million people I would imagine. There will be detractors, most of whom have a vested interest in the arena staying put. Luckily, they aren't the ones writing the cheques or attending the negotiations.

Interesting how he uses 173,000 people in Kanata-Stittsville as an argument for staying in Kanata. Not super compelling as case for an NHL market, when Ottawa is already on the small side at 1.5 million.

It constantly amazes me that people don't get how a central location makes travel shorter for the most people.

Wow didn't realize most of the teams have it within a mile of their city hall. Crazy.

When the Palladium was built it was in the City of Kanata...how close to Kanat's City Hall was it? (Think they had moved from Town Centre to Terry Fox/Palladium by then so 1.9km?)

Exactly, 1.64km door to door from the Kanata City Hall to the Palladium. Not that the Kanata City Hall has anything to do with urbanity or a convenient location...

They played their first seasons at the Civic Centre (4.64KM from the then Ottawa City Hall), thus 'Ottawa Senators'...they kept the Ottawa name when they moved to Kanata. No different than the NY Giants playing out of NJ, for instance.

They were always moving to Kanata, so it wasn’t really a matter of « keeping » the name. . The name of the team is the name for the market they play in, which is definitely not Kanata (despite its 173,000 people!).

I think we can all agree, though, that the current location is not the most convenient for the majority of the city. I'm pretty sure a central location with excellent biking/pedestrian/transit access as well as 10s of thousands of parking spots a short walk away is much more desirable. The only site I can think of that may have been more accessible to more people would have been Hurdman/Lees but it seems an arena there was never meant to be. As much as reasonable people shouldn't listen to folks like Denley, many will parrot his talking points. Hopefully, there is enough public support that this won't matter but time will tell.

Distance from City Hall is not necessarily the best measure in my opinion, remember the old Ottawa City Hall on Sussex?

I would say that you should pick the most central intersection of a city and go from there. For example Ottawa should be Bank@Sparks for example, Toronto Bay& Younge, Winnipeg Portage& Main etc....
Ottawa arena is actually ~1.25km from the city's core

Also some of the others are not what we would call real city centres:
Sunrise, FL - 3.4 km (Not a real city)
Anaheim, CA - 4.4 km (Not a real city)
Philadelphia, PA - 5.7 km (Moving downtown, but is part of a multi facility sports area (Football, Baseball Hockey/Basketball)
Raleigh, NC - 7.6 km - this one is legitimate, really far from downtown
Las Vegas, NV - 7.6 km (We can argue the Strip is "downtown")
Hempsted, NY - 8.9 km (Not a real city)

I am 12 km from CTC in Aylmer as the crow flies, but 32 by car.

Bring on the downtown location.

All true. None are real city centres, and most aren't even pseudo city-centres.

As for Philly, I don't think they are actually moving downtown. Pretty sure the new plan is to stay in South Philly.

I know these things.

They did not ‘keep’ the name when they moved to Kanata, the franchise was awarded to Ottawa, not Kanata. They only played in Kanata because that is where the owners owned land and built the arena.

My point was the person countering the city hall distance thing with the distance to Kanata city hall was not a valid point in my mind, because they are not the Kanata Senators. Nor would the Detroit Pistons be the Auburn Hills Pistons when they played at the Palace. (I use that example because the Palladium was closely modeled after the Palace of Auburn Hills)

About the Ottawa Senators new rink at LeBreton Flats
What steps are left before the NCC-Sens deal becomes final? (And does the new development impact Bluesfest?)

Some great insights here about how we got into the arena mess we are in now: https://obj.ca/column-why-the-ottawa-senators-call-kanata-home/

The Kanata site has served its purpose, but it was never the ideal location and it's time to move on....no matter what Randall thinks

Disagree.

• Philadelphia abandoned their downtown arena idea and are building a new arena in the awful South Philly Sports Complex.
• True, Sunrise is a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, which would make it 18.5 km Fort Lauderdale city hall. Still closer than the CTC to the city centre.
• Anaheim is a real city in the same way that Fort Lauderdale, Mississauga, Fort Worth, or Newark, are their own cities. While in proximity to a larger centre, they are their own city and the largest city in Orange County, which is home to over 3 million residents.
• The Las Vegas strip could only be considered downtown to tourist. No locals would ever consider that. It’s simply just a grouping of hotels for visitors.
• Hampstead or the former Uniondale location may not be “real cities” but they aren’t exactly anchored to NYC either. We have no real comparative in Canada to Long Island.

Do we know when the Sens or NCC will give their next update? Designs? Really looking forward to the design/build process here.

I've gone to eagles games in Philly. I love the location and fact all their sports are in a single spot. For football its ideal because they have some amazing space for tailgating. Serviced by metro and its just 7 stops from city hall. you can even walk to genos or pats from there albeit about 45 minutes. Its not downtown downtown but its in the city. Go to a commanders game and compare, that stadium is way out! Admittedly football may be an apples and oranges comparison to a certain degree due to the much larger crowds

Nothing really new or informative however, this article seems to be a shot back at the last few negative opinionated articles for Ottawa to actually have something great to bring life to the core of the City finally.
