From what I understand, the Au'au Channel is about 8 to 9 miles wide with a depth of about 250 feet. On top of this, there is a ferry service connecting Maui and Lanai with a travel time of one hour. A bridge might be impractical from an environmental standpoint due to the coral reefs located there, but would a bored tunnel be a practical solution? What are your opinions on the possibility of a bored tunnel similar to the Chunnel between Maui and Lanai and how could sea level rise be factored into such a project?
