Most people who advocate for cycling infrastructure in HRM are useful idiots who don't know that the Halifax Cycling Coalition is a front funded by the
World Bank's "Global Shapers Program" that seeks to create a socially engineered, centrally planned Smart City by 2030 where private vehicle ownership is all
but abolished except for a handful of elites who can afford the 25 dollar per day "congestion fee" to drive a car on the peninsula. Most streets in HRM will be Local Traffic Only Quiet Streets (and this will be enforced), Cars will be banned from downtown completely, You will ride the community bus, walk or bicycle and you will never be allowed to leave your little bubble.

"Cut 30% of your hospital beds and build bike lanes."

Bike lanes are part and parcel of neo-liberal austerity. They are part of the Structural Adjustment Programs SAP's from the World Bank, Economic Forum and IMF.

The People With the Correct Opinions(TM) breathlessly speak of Copenhagen as the "model" ,

their Planner God Saint Jan Getz uses the word "Copenhagenization" as the "process" for "making cities more like Copenhagen."

What happened in the 1970's that made the Dutch switch from cars to bikes?

Could it have something to do with the economic colapse caused by the oil shock and a worldwide depression and Nixon closing the gold window, ending the post war Bretton-Woods economic order,
ushering in era of harsh neo-liberal austerity cuts, chronic high unemployment and infaltion, making people so poor they can only afford to ride a bike?

I've avoided this whole conversation in general over the months but at this point this thread is pretty toxic it seems.

I've never cycled as transit, but I have lived downtown for almost a decade now. My street has had a bike lane for years, and I've seen more and more popping up around me. As a driver, I do not care in the slightest. I'm pretty lazy - I do drive a lot, however, I never search for parking downtown for more than a few minutes - and I'm usually able to hit multiple spots after parked if running errands.

It promotes a healthy cause for very little cost to the city. They have had a bike network planned for years, it's not like every street will have a dedicated lane. As the cycling infrastructure continues to improve, more and more will see it as a viable option. I honestly don't see what the problem is.

How are we supposed to patronize businesses on Windsor Street with on-street parking gone and now parking banned on the side streets?

There are plenty of ways to prevent people from driving that have nothing to do with bike lanes: Highway tolls, congestion charges, restricting the days certain plate numbers can drive. While they may be warranted in some extreme cases, bike lanes are a comparatively small intervention.

There are dark things though: Car lanes reserved for politicians, not being allowed a driver’s licence because of your political beliefs, having your name displayed publicly as a mark of shame for traffic infractions considered an “honest mistake” here.

Does the car give you freedom to travel further? Sure. Does it free you from political oppression like some claim? No way.

Another user who has been mysteriously inactive in the thread this last week would make similar associations between the state of healthcare and bike lanes.

I would check to see if this is a second account. (Which is not permitted)

Seems like a thinly veiled attempt to rebrand oneself.

Yet the dogma is strangely familiar as is the use of Trademarks

Say what you mean. You are accusing me of opening a second account even though the writing style is totally different and the tropes used are not ones I have mentioned previously.

For the record, I have no idea who this user is although I am glad to have another voice speaking out on the subject to balance the cycling advocates who try to dominate the discussion here. I have had this account here for nearly 2 decades and only ever needed the single one. The mods can check to confirm the IP addresses are not related, and I ask them to confirm that.

Shall I report you for malicious intent or shall I wait for you to retract the statement?

It is unfortunate that those who disagree with my positions attack me in this manner just because I have a different view, but that now seems to be SOP for those of a "progressive" bent. Ironically they are now acting in a very similar manner to what they like to accuse me of, even though that is something I never do. Shameful.

This new account clearly isn’t Keith. While I often disagree with Keith’s perspectives, he puts thought into them, and I doubt he feels the need to hide them beside a fake account. As far as I know, his perspectives on government and planning are based on a feeling that governments are incompetent and overreaching, not based on some Agenda 21 conspiracy theory.

I wasn’t referring to you Keith, I have someone else in mind. The person who brought up healthcare.

It’s not all about you.

To clear up the confusion, I suspect that it’s Dartguard. Before salvos get fired, the mods can check the IP. If I’m right? Forum rules are followed. If I’m wrong? I wasted the Moderator’s time and I apologize to him and Dartguard.

Who, then? SAY WHAT YOU MEAN. MonctonRad? Dartguard? Colin May? All of them would be an absurd allegation given what the account in question has posted since it bears no relation to what they typically write. However none of them use "TM Regd" like I do occasionally.

It seems that your "progressive" buddies who have subsequently chimed in do indeed think this allegation is all about me. We have moved no further towards a resolution. The ball is in your court.

You can see who I mean in my subsequent post. I was hoping someone would look into it without me having to accuse anyone. Some may have jumped the gun to accuse others but I was hoping a moderator would verify before direct accusations rolled in. I suspect this isn’t the only puppet account.

Anyway, if that person has made the chat this toxic, they are succeeding in their goals.

I know I'm a brand new account so it's easy to say "who does this guy think he is?" but please set that aside and look at the general poison through several pages of this thread.
I don’t know if closing the thread is a good solution. The toxicity would probably just move to other threads. Eye-catching titles are just Colin’s style. I think it would bring on the issue of moderator bias if the threads were artificially restricted.

I may disagree with much of what Keith, Moncton, Dartguard and Colin say, but I think it’s important to understand their perspectives, and in some cases there may be ideas I agree with. I don’t think disagreement is bad, in many cases it’s beneficial: imagine how dead the forum would be if we didn’t refute the other’s points!

I can understand why Keith was so upset about the accusation, he’s a SSP veteran and 15 years of on the forum shouldn’t end that way.
