That looks right. I guess they'll demolish the plant behind the Printing Bureau and build a the new one closer to the core.

Cool. Noticed today they closed the pathway along the river here. But maybe it's just for the Jacques Cartier Park renewal.

I really love how they're considering the visitor experience at the parliamentary precinct throughout all the renovations that they're doing.

How far away are we from seeing this built I wonder, 5 years?

Does it not require NCC approval before construction begins? I haven't seen any coverage on this project.

I also haven't seen any coverage. I've followed every single NCC Board Meetings for the past 4 years and don't remember any mention of it.

I know that the NCC has had long standing plans to "extend" Bank Street to the River and provide vertical circulation down the the River Banks (hence the name, "Bank Street"), and this project, though they do not seem involved in any direct way, seems to finally address this.

Bank Street was named after the multiple large banks it has, including the Bank of Canada.

Bank Street’s name long precedes any thought of a Bank of Canada.

That's a common miss-conception.

From the Kitchissippi Ward Newletter I received by email August 22, 2020:

Tunney's Pasture heating plant

I'm seeking more details from Catherine McKenna's office, but as part of a very large contract recently awarded to PCL to renovate and build new heating/cooling plants for federal buildings in Ottawa, a new plant is proposed to be built at Tunney's Pasture. The current central plant is located near the LRT Station today. Consistent with the new masterplan, the new plant is being constructed on the east side of Banting Drive and across the street from the Banting Health Research Building at its north end. While I'm looking forward to learning more (and passing it on), my understanding is that this will preserve the park space planned for this area in the Tunney's master plan.
The PCL rendering.

From Jeff Leiper via Kitchissipi Ward website.

Tunney's Pasture heating/cooling building

While I'm still on the hunt for further details, I want to thank residents who have asked about a new heating plant to be built on the Tunney's Pasture campus.

It turns out that recently the feds announced an initiative to modernize its five central heating and cooling plants. This includes the one at Tunney's where a new plant will be built on Colombine between Banting and Goldenrod, and that will see the existing plant decommissioned. PCL was chosen to do the work, which will proceed on a P3 basis. You can read more about that here on the PCL website or here in an iPolitics article. This continues to leave space for the large park that's part of the Tunney's Pasture Master Plan, work on which continues. While I had an expectation that there might begin to be consultations on the Tunney's re-development this year, that now seems unlikely. When consultations do open, I will be sure to include those details in a future newsletter and blog.

I'm still seeking details on when construction might start, and to confirm some of the architectural details, from Minister McKenna's office. The render shown with this post is part of PCL's online materials.

The Cliff plant seems to be fully under construction now, both the plant buildings and the cliff face to the west. Anybody have any idea what's the schedule?

Some new details and drawings from today's presentation.

Those metal stacks are 35 metre tall.

I hope this ends up every bit as good as the renderings.

This is so cool. Those stainless steel chimneys are going to be beacons when they catch the sunset a certain way.

I share the concerns of two Board members regarding the materiality of the smoke stacks and the metal cage down the cliff. It might be better if the smoke stacks had a more brushed steel, concrete/stone or copper material; basically something less reflective (copper is reflective at first, but dulls out within a couple years). Having greenery grow on the metal cage would make it blend in better IMO.

Overall though, this is a fantastic project. If it had only been about upgrading the plants, it would have been worthwhile if maybe a little boring for most, but the public space and stellar architecture makes this quite exciting.

What would be the problem with reflective surfaces?

I'm pretty sure the reflective surfaces on the stacks are the entire point of this design. I am curious if there is any effect based on a certain time of year or a certain day.
