This has been brought up repeatedly at labour negotiations. If Canada Post thought this could be profitable... I'm quite sure it would have been pursued.

Why is banking such an issue for remote/rural areas? Perhaps because Banks don't deem it profitable?

Huh. Yeah here in Kingston its always CP with Amazon.

People I know in Ottawa use a hack to force Canada Post delivery... They enter "PO Box 0" on address line 2 when putting in the delivery address. Amazon's algorithms automatically force it to Canada Post if they see the words "PO Box" in a delivery address.

I think the best way forward for postal policy is to dissolve Canada Post as a mail carrier, and place its network of post offices and mailboxes into the hands of a new government entity that would sell wholesale access to it to private couriers on a cost-recovery basis. My only real beef with UPS, FedEx, etc. is how much of a pain it is to pick up packages from isolated depots.. if they had access to Canada Post's network it would be fine.

Is a reduced mail delivery schedule not possible? I personally would be okay receiving mail only twice a week, for instance.

The problem is CP is required by law to deliver a letter (and parcels) to EVERY address in Canada at the same price. Mississauga to Markham... no problem. Virden to Cornerbrook.. hmmm. How would that shake out?

My local FedEx and UPS are in a nearby strip mall and local hardware store... not much further than my local Post Office

That said... as mentioned Amazon is now bypassing all that and leaving packages on porches with no signatures required.

Me sense disruption coming.

Once a week mail delivery will be enough for regular mail.

Parcels can still come whenever, based on how fast the shipper paid for.

Canada Post is planning to end home delivery. Here's how community mailboxes will work
Crown corporation approved to move forward with transformation plan, end door-to-door delivery

If your dog goes crazy every time the mail delivery person shows up at your door, you may be relieved to know that it soon may no longer be a problem.

But beyond that, a lot of people are uncertain what the pending demise of door-to-door mail delivery means for them.

Canada Post said on Monday that it's moving ahead with a transformation plan that includes a transition to community mailboxes, eventually ending home delivery. It's something Public Services and Procurement Canada directed last year — as it faces what's been called an "existential" crisis and faltering finances.

Toronto city Coun. Josh Matlow understands Canada Post needs to adapt. But he, like many Canadians, has plenty of questions about the switch to community mailboxes and concerns "about everything from beauty and design to safety and accessibility."

Here are answers to some of the questions you might have about the the future of mail delivery in Canada.

Harper Cons pulled the trigger, but Trudeau stopped it. I would have liked another plan to adapt them to the new realities at the time, like a rolling schedule like garbage (three day a week mail delivery, with mailmen... mailperson?... working 5 days a week in different areas depending on the rolling schedule).
