Query…can anyone explain how the small street Flemish Village Lane, just east and north of the intersection of Western & Santa Monica, got that odd name? Was there something in that area that was lost when the hotel and apartment buildings went up over there? TIA

Alkapone, believe it or not I had this post ready for Flemish Lane. (I don't believe 'Village' is in the name)


It's the street to the right (east) of the old Palomar Apt/Hotel.







Flemish Lane is quite short. Here's an aerial view.





And here's a street view when the buildings were painted in various colors.



The multi-colors makes it look a bit. . um . . Flemishy.



It has since been repaited.

Thanks, ER! It definitely included Village on older maps before the freeway era. The road formed a square joining Santa Monica in two places. Serrano is shown cut off above and then restarted from the south side of SMB slightly east out of alignment. Maybe the freeway construction changed all of it over there. I’m told a sequence of older houses to the east behind the Ted’s Ranch Market were sitting condemned around 1957/8 and were torn down to form the parking areas behind the buildings facing SMB on the north edge.

There's no sign of Flemish Ln on the 1921 Baist (below left). There may be some sort of thoroughfare on the 1947 aerial (below right).

Yet here it is in recognizable form just five years later on a 1952 aerial taken as the freeway was being built. Below left covers roughly the same area as the images above, and I've enlarged the square into the image on the right. Click the link below to see it about three times bigger.

Interesting HossC! The ‘21 Baist seems to show an unnamed alley heading straight north in the direction of the studio’s lot up at Sunset. Just conjecture, but makes me wonder if they may have once had a “Flemish Village” set on the backlot leaving this lower street’s origins as a “Lane” which was later cut off and turned toward Serrano. Then again, I’m a bit screwy! (BTW. I picked up a loose snapshot a couple of years back of Ben & the boys up on the wagon at the Ponderosa Ranch with the tourists. Little Joe was sittin’ up with the driver and the others were back in the hay bed.)

In search of the elusive Lover's Cascade.


"Rare Steroview Photo Continent - Wildwood Canyon Burbank California CA"




I wasn't 100% sure where Wildwood Canyon was located so I looked it up.



As you can see it's northeast of Burbank. (so the seller's description is correct)


Hopefully we can pinpoint the location of Lover's Cascade / and see if it's still . .um. .cascading.

Odd, and it gets even more interesting when you realize the original Cahuenga Valley Railroad steam line to Hollywood ran up along the eastern side of the then “County Road” (Western Avenue later) to curve westward at Prospect. Maps depict the right-of-way just about aligned with that alley. It is reported that the section below SMB was electrified around 1905 and remained as part of the New P.E. until abandonment in 1915. The L.A. Ry. line in the center of Western Avenue (the “S”-line) would have to be another R.O.W. altogether if that were correct. (Of course any widening of Western could throw this off if it had actually absorbed the C.V.R.R. ROW.) Photos of the William Fox Studio do show the alleyway is stopped just south of the backlot by that time and any thing from an earlier era to the north of Sunset was probably wiped clean before then as there were orchards and structures already in there. There is one photo allegedy identifying the NE corner of Western & SMB before the big buildings went in and it shows some existing houses and some sort of garden area (nursery?) sitting east of a real estate office.

It was meant to be named Film Row but then they went with Flemish Village, because I guess it was going to look like one.

I’m getting a listing that says the reverse indicates Arrow Head Hot Springs scenery: https://discoverarchives.library.utoront...ritten-note-arrowhead-hot-spring-scenery

Could that be right? (The NYPL digital sample of this view card wouldn’t display for me.) Not finding it in Burbank’s park and the Thousand Oaks one is not a match.

Just a note: in "The Big Sleep", Raymond Chandler sets the Fulwider Building (a fictional location, chapter 25), where Canino poisons Harry Jones, at the intersection of Western and Santa Monica. Is this a nod to this “Film Row” showplace business ?
