Four giant motorized wheels will soon make their second Richmond Road crossing in two years. Atop them will sit an internally braced, life-sized gas station.
Structural engineers will move the building across the street from the parking lot at the corner of Island Park Drive and Richmond Road where it’s been sitting since June 2024.
“The ultimate treatment is that we’re moving the building as it is and we’re moving it back,” said Ahmed Zayed, vice-president of development and construction for Trinity Group. “The entirety of the building, including the roof, is being retained and moved, hence the significance of it.”
It’s been almost two years since the Champlain Oil “cottage” gas station was moved from its original location to the parking lot to make room for a development project. On March 31, it will finally make its way back home.
The development group will be hard at work starting at 7 p.m. on March 31 as they slowly move the over-90-year-old gas station building to its original spot.
“I generally find it really fascinating,” said Jeff Leiper, city councilor for Kitchissippi ward where the gas station is located. “I think it’s going to be fascinating watching it go back across the street where it will sit more permanently.”
Leiper said he anticipates residents will come out and watch the move, as was the case in 2024 when more than 20 people showed up to watch the gas station roll down the street.
The building project that prompted the gas station to be moved across the street is called The Parkstone. Now that it’s nearing completion, the gas station can safely return home.
The former Champlain Oil Company Service Station was constructed in 1934 at 70 Richmond Rd. It set itself apart by being a small and somewhat irregularly shaped, stucco-clad building.
