The developers in NY are very practical folks, they build for what the market requires not for prestige like these guys in China here.

I wish the early 20th century developers of the Woolworth Building had been more practical so we wouldn't have to look at that ugly detailed facade. Thankfully the nepotistic real estate cartel we have today in New York City is informed almost entirely by market demands.

The B1M's YouTube channel recently made an interesting and informative video about this near-megatall:

I still think this tower would likely be completed, if only because the government doesn't want this unfinished eyesore to cause continuing embarrassment for them.

True, at least they will make it *look* completed on the outside, eventually.

Has there been any movement on this thing? It seems to have fallen completely off the radar and even its Wikipedia page appears to have been scrubbed.

The situation unfolding at Evergrande reminded me of this project even though I don't believe they were involved, if anyone knows anything.....

This Gigantic Skyscraper Is the World’s Tallest Abandoned Building

By Spooky on July 25th, 2024

Quote:
Originally designed to be the centerpiece of a luxurious real-estate project in Tianjin, Goldin Finance 117, aka China 117 Tower, is famous for being the world’s tallest unfinished and unoccupied building. Construction began in 2008, but was halted just two years later, during the fallout of the Great Recession. Work on the project was resumed in 2011, with an estimated completion date between 2018 and 2019. However, by September 2015, construction was once again suspended and has not resumed since. When work on Goldin Finance 117 was suspended, the impressive skyscraper was the fifth tallest building in the world. Now it’s the world’s tallest abandoned building.

.....Today, Goldin Finance 117 isn’t only the world’s tallest “ghostscraper,” but also a cautionary tale for other developers and even the Chinese Government. Following the failure of Golding Group’s project, authorities issued a decree in 2020 to significantly limit the scale and number of skyscrapers being built across the country.

I'm intrigued by this. No one seems to know what's going on. This isn't an invisible tower.

Goldin Finance 117 is expected to officially resume construction in March 2025, and some Chinese websites are also circulating this.
天津117大厦预计在2025年3月份正式复工,中国一些网站也在流传这个事情

Great to hear that construction will resume.

This building is way too tall to stand there uncompleted. It could be another icon.

Construction of world’s tallest abandoned skyscraper to resume after a decade

The above 4/24/2025 article says "Construction of the world’s tallest unoccupied skyscraper may resume as early as next week, almost 10 years after work ground to a halt, according to Chinese state media."

I love the design of this building. That diamond is peak. Glad to see it's getting finished.

This building looks so bad-assed. It is the John Hancock of China.
