Von Ebert Brewing closing original NW Pearl District Location

New School Beer + Cider

At the end of April 2024, Von Ebert Brewing will close its NW Portland, OR Pearl district location to focus on its brewery operations and the opening of the new production brewery and taproom on N. Cook Street in the former Ecliptic Brewing mothership. Employees from the closing location have been offered jobs at the other taprooms and restaurants.
Looks like their Washington County taproom location will remain open. This is a bummer, I really liked this place. It was virtually empty every time I went in there, though.

I hope the space doesn't remain vacant long, it's a great location. I used to spend many evenings there but something changed in the past year and my after work group found different digs and we haven't been back in sometime.

Basics Market Outlet is your new home for deeply discounted, overstocked meat, eggs and other basics as available. In these changing times, we have learned that our communities are looking for values. Our Outlet stores will have limited hours and limited staff in order to keep operating costs down. While our product assortment will change as we make opportunistic purchases, you can count on good quality and great values every time you shop with us!

They reopened the Farmington road store with a similar concept. Word is that they are tied into long term leases on both locations and need a way to offset the rent.

Willamette University leases space in the Pearl District

Willamette University is moving students into the Ecotrust building in the Pearl District.

The new lease brings the Salem-based private university's graduate programs closer to its Pacific Northwest College of Arts.

Willamette's main campus sits across from the Oregon Capitol in Salem. But like other schools, including the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, it holds many classes in Portland. Willamette first started operating in Portland in 2004. It has a few locations in Portland now, including at the 200 Market Building, from which it is moving.
...continues at the Portland Business Journal.

Going over the Freemont bridge, I think I saw the new self-storage building on Savier in the north pearl under construction. Looks like the elevator tower rising. Not very exciting ... but any signs of life down here are noteworthy at this point.

When I lived in the west end, I'd go to Lovejoy Bakers from time to time for a croissant breakfast sandwich. Occasionally to the B&O shop for some parts for my turntable, but this place appears to have permanently closed. I don't have a lot of reason to go over there much anymore.

I did do an art gallery meetup with the walking urbanists group in the winter and things were pretty sleepy. Admittedly, the weather wasn't great. Aside from briefly visiting some vendors and showrooms, I haven't spent much time in the Pearl recently. Is it actually pretty sleepy, or did I just catch it on an off day? NW 13th seems pretty lively, but it's got a different feel.

Hopefully the post office site infuses some energy into the place, but the area already has higher population density than most of the metro.

Anyone know if something is going into the old Henry's site on SW 12th & Burnside? Looks like some activity inside.

There is - I posted about it over here.

Very glad to see it... and very curious about what it's going to be.

A couple shots of the Cambria Hotel u/c at NW Couch and Park, they start taking reservations Aug 30. Nice addition to this part of town.

Some more details about the long-awaited lease of the former Henry's Tavern:

Recent Permits
“Recent” includes a couple of permits with the City—one set up in May and one set up in August. The August one deals mostly with fire alarms and smoke detectors, but the May permit involves removing exterior awnings, demoing walls, creating new walls, remodeling the bar, seating areas, kitchen, mezzanine, ceiling, flooring, finishes, plumbing and electric.

In May 2025, plans from GBD Architects were accessible via the Portland City Auditor archives (efiles). The document is called Henry’s Redevelopment Brewery Block 2. Some well-established companies were listed as part of the Project Team:

Building Management: BGO, 299 Park Avenue in Manhattan.
Architects: GBD Architects, 1120 NW Couch Street in Portland.
Contractor: Swinerton, 850 NW 13th Avenue in Portland.
Tenant: APICII, 93 4th Avenue in Manhattan.
Client: JLL, 1120 NW Couch Street in Portland (Note: not part of the main Project Team list).
...

The liquor license application filed with the City of Portland outlines some of the practical aspects of Hearth & Vine’s operation:

They’ll be open every day.
They be open 7am to midnight every day.
They plan to operate indoors and outdoors.
They have a lot of seating: 121 in the restaurant, 78 outdoor, and 140 of “other seating.”
They’ll have live music, recorded music, and a DJ as far as the sound system goes.
They applied for a full on-premises liquor license, so everything from beer to cocktails will be available for them to prepare
.

So is it going to be like a Nashville Broadway style club/music venue? Huge space, and seeing all the mentions of different style music.

7AM to 12AM seems like a VERY long time to be open. I wonder if that's not just some catch-all. Of course, why mention it, that's not part of permit, is it?

I met a friend in Denver recently, and we randomly got a nightcap near our hotel at...Henrys. Felt like old times. Actually made me think how many better food-bars there are in Portland than Henry's and I realized I didn't miss the place (aside the empty space in the city). PDX airport and downtown Denver, what a weird biz model.

I walked by the old OBA today and saw that the "for lease" signs are finally gone and construction work was in progress. I missed the news of a new steakhouse coming to town.

https://nwexaminer.com/p/new-steakhouse-planned-for-the-pearl

This is very welcome news! That building has been a sad empty site since 2017.
