Happy New Year to all.

The holiday doldrums are nearly over. Within the next 7-10 days, the news cycle will start to pick up again,

Not really sure where to post this so here it goes. Move if you like. It's just for fun.

I was recently asked the question, if you had to rent an apartment and it only had windows facing one way, what direction would you want if you had the choice? North, south, east or west.

I like the sun so south was my pick. I don't think I would want an apartment that only had north facing windows.

Thinking back when I bought my house, I did actually think about what direction the main living spaces and back yard were facing. My kitchen and dining room is where I spend a lot of my time and they face south, as well as my back yard for my garden.

I wonder if developers think of that when building apartments or would that be irrelevant?

For general living quarters, I think I'd want a South facing window, so it brings in the most light through the day.

For a bedroom however, I'd want a North facing window, so it gets the least amount of light, making it easier to sleep in. (Which is a bit ironic since my current condo, my bedroom is south facing. At least I have good blinds to block the light)

I don't think I'd want west facing windows for living quarters, since that would tend to get a lot of late-day glare that could be blinding when you're home in the evenings and trying to watch TV/use a computer screen.

But that's just my initial off the cuff thoughts on it.

I do know I love that my condo has a south facing back deck; it's great for growing veggies in planters since it gets ALL the sun through the summer.

South is nice… but so is West. North is definitely the worst, but East can be pretty great.

I have some amazing views of the sunrise from the kitchen window at home, and even some views of the harbour, I can see all the way across uptown to Courtney Bay Breakwater from that kitchen window. At night, the refinery looks like a distant skyline of a city. I can even see a traffic light on what I think is Bayside Drive, which is quite a liminal sight at 2am from the back deck. It’s crazy how far you can see when you have some elevation.
