My buddy and I hiked Bear Mountain yesterday. This is located near West Point, across the Hudson River from Peekskill. It was a beautiful day and it might have been peak foliage. We only saw about ten other people on the trail all day.
I think the person driving this vehicle had a little too much moonshine before getting behind the wheel.
This bridge connects Rockland and Westchester counties.
Now to the high seas. I already posted some of these in another photo thread but the striped bass fishing has been excellent in recent weeks. I caught a 28-inch keeper on Monday and grilled it for dinner.

The fishing photos are from New Rochelle. I was joking the other day that Long Island seems like such a distant and mysterious place. I am probably the same distance to Great Neck as I am from Larchmont but Long Island seems like a foreign land.

To have such a beautiful landscape so close to the big city is amazing...
Indeed. That is one of the reasons I chose New Rochelle. I am about a half mile from the Long Island Sound and 35 minutes via Metro North from Grand Central.

I'm gonna sound like a crazy homer, but NYC area is massively underrated for natural beauty. It's like the physical environment overshadows the natural assets.
You have the Palisades directly across from Manhattan. You can bike from Manhattan to wilderness, over the GWB. You can take Metro North to the Appalachian Trail. You can take a bus from PA Bus Terminal to climbing in the Gunks. You have more beaches than anywhere.
There's a lot of good stuff, not spectacular at its best like a Seattle or Vancouver, but very solid and comprehensive all around. Definitely prettiest natural surroundings for major U.S. metro outside of Western U.S. And unlike the West, tons of attractive towns in the natural environment. Places like Cold Spring, Rhinebeck, Sag Harbor, Mystic, etc.
The Bear Mountain Bridge turned 100 years old last November. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world for a short period of time. There is a big birds nest on one of the towers. It's either a Kestrel or an Osprey nest. They don't need to have aircraft warning lights on the towers which would bother the birds, because the large hills on each side of the span are taller points.
There are also tons of Bald Eagles in the area recently in large part thanks to cleanup of the river. They roost nearby at Iona Island and the Stony Point Battlefield, which are further south. They will be showing up in big numbers soon as winter descends. They will even go down to the city to hunt, but are more numerous in the midhudson. last year when the Hudson river froze, they were everywhere. They love hanging out on the floating ice to hunt.

Thank you for this information on the avian wildlife of the region. I spend a lot of time in northern Westchester, and have seen some bald eagles there. I am glad the species has rebounded so strongly.
I didn’t see an ospreys on my hike but closer to me, there are quite a few ospreys on the Long Island Sound.

I agree, we are very fortunate to have so many trails, rivers, beaches, and the Sound nearby.
The DC-area is also no slouch with outdoor recreation areas nearby. I am fortunate I have lived in both locations.
