Construction notice is out. Construction starting in June. Bank Street from Riverside westbound to Lamira/Belanger will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

I wonder if for projects like this, the city does it smart, where the construction crews work overnight as well...when there is less danger due to lower traffic volumes, lower heat than during the day, and get it finished sooner? I know that there are always concerns about budget (such as who gets the bill for OT if the construction is allowed to be done 24/7), but if the job gets done days or weeks sooner as a result, should the cost be about the same...I dunno...

It would make sense. I think that a big concern is noise. All night construction for months on end is not generally popular with residents.

That said, we had regular all-night work within a couple hundred metres for the rapid bridge replacements last summer, and I can't say it was overly bothersome. As I recall, they had to get permits and notify residents every time they extended the hours.

I don't think we have a thread for this one, but did anyone attend the information session on the Bank Street Active Transportation and Transit Priority Feasibility Study last night?

The options were... disappointing to say the least. Not sure why on-street parking gets such a priority in this city, especially at the expense of moving people on our streets.

There fire the planner/traffic engineers involved terrible...

It's great there considering freight for once but loading zones can be on side streets.

Also, one of the plans involved just turning parking lane into just a bus lane. Nor did it look like there was talk of burying utilities.

And why do pedestrians seem to be the lowest priority. Pedestrians, freight access, transit users, cyclists, and then private vehicle users, that's the order of importance for bank... And turn Bronson into a proper ave.

Agreed, I just took the Survey and told them the 4 options are all terrible.

None of them have wider sidewalks! Absolutely no improvements to pedestrians (and Bank is most likely one of the busiest pedestrian retail street in Ottawa)!

Pathetic... parking and loading bays on Bank should be an automatic no. Are they trying too hard to appease Glebites?

Apparently the study is only looking at changes to the roadway, no changes to curbs. To which I say what's even the point of doing the study if you're not making wider sidewalks?

Residents get an update on Bank Street renewal progress

By Shaun Vardon, CTV News
Published: April 16, 2026 at 7:07AM EDT

Get ready for traffic headaches as Phase One of the Bank Street Renewal project grinds on.

Started in 2024, residents and businesses have been dealing with disruptions for years. This summer, the rebuilding of the intersection at Bank Street and Riverside Drive will take months. From May until September, Riverside Drive will be reduced to one lane in either direction, congesting what is already a busy traffic artery.

Neil Cochrane lives steps from Bank Street. He understands the need to upgrade infrastructure, but it’s been painful. He took advantage of a city information session Wednesday evening to hear about progress and ask questions.

“It’s been a big inconvenience for residents, and businesses are suffering along Bank Street. It’s good to hear what progress has been made,” Cochrane said. “You have to renew your infrastructure from time to time. It’s necessary; it’s painful, but it’s necessary.”

Alta Vista Coun. Marty Carr admits the Bank Street construction has been disruptive, but it will lead to improvements in her neighbourhood. The plan includes the full reconstruction of the road, the sanitary sewer, and water mains. There will also be new cycle tracks, the introduction of full-height and mountable curb medians and new street scaping.

“I’m here to meet with the community discuss the impact so that they understand the scope of the work that is going to happen and what sort of detours are in place for the summer construction season,” Carr said. “We anticipate that there will be a lot of traffic backups but, again, it’s a necessary evil in order to get this work done.”

According to officials, Phase One of the Bank Street Renewal project, which is between Riverside Drive and Collins Avenue, should be complete sometime in 2027.

Phase Two of the project is still in the planning stages. It will affect Bank from Collins Avenue to Ledbury Avenue, near South Keys. The city has not released a timeline for that work to be completed.
