Although I'm happy to see a bit more of a street grid and space for cyclists, some residential could have been added on Montreal and Blair Roads. In 70 years, the land is still very much under utilized, so I have trouble believing it will eventually fill up with the proposed additional NRC space.

So much space wasted in the form of pointless, anti-"human scale" setbacks and fake-green fringes.

Can we please, as a society, learn how to build nice urbanity and even nice suburbanity?

Security requirements may limit possibilities for creating a mixed use community in this case. Any improvements in density and pedestrian/cycling access will be a win. What about transit improvements? Not likely with the current municipal situation. Let them walk 1 km or more, and we will see how minimal transit use will be.

A new $1 billion federal science facility will be built at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) facility in Ottawa.

Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jenna Sudds announced Friday the site has been selected and contracts have been awarded to build the new TerraCanada National Capital Area project at the NRC on Montreal Road.

"The TerraCanada NCA facility will support scientific advancements for sustainable land and resource development, as well as a low-carbon economy," the federal government said in a statement.

The new facility will house approximately 450 employees and scientists from Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

The contract for architectural and engineering services to design the TerraCanada NCA facility has been awarded to AECOM Canada, and the contract for construction management services has been awarded to EBC Inc.

Design work will begin this year, with site preparation and construction starting in 2026.

Sudds also announced the preliminary schematic design has been completed for the new $600 million Transportation Safety and Technology Science project, which will also be built at the NRC.

The project will relocate the laboratory and head office of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada to Ottawa's east end, with over 260 employees and scientists working in the building.

A request for proposals for the construction of the new Transportation Safety and Technology Science project will be released later this year.

The federal government says the TerraCanada NCA Facility and the Transportation Safety and Technology Science project will provide scientists with "leading-edge, multi-purpose, sustainable and collaborative facilities."

"By building these 2 new facilities on the National Research Council of Canada's main campus, we are providing our scientists and researchers with unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and transformation," Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, said in a statement.

"Canadians can be confident that they will have the tools they need to meet the needs of Canadian society now and into the future."

Once the TerraCanada facility is completed this will allow the Geological Survey of Canada and CANMET to vacate 601 and 555 Booth St. 615 Booth St. has already been vacated except possibly the north wing which maybe occupied by CDN Armed Forces mapping branch. This will free up more of the Booth St. Complex for redevelopment. Any CDN Forestry Services scientists at Booth St. would most likely be relocated as well but I am not aware there are any at Booth St. now. I say this with some confidence as a former NRCan employee. I am guessing nothing will happen at Booth St. until 2030 for these properties.

Hoping most of those Booth buildings can be converted to housing. Those are mid-century gems.

This bears a certain resemblance to the Ingenium building on St. Laurent Blvd.

There's no way highlighted area is 2.9KM from north to south. According to Google Maps that's only 1.9KM.

It's a typo - or they accidentally measured it it all the way from Ogilvie Rd.

It's true. And as with Ingenium, a cool building that stands out driving down St. Laurent, this should add some visual interest to the drive over the viaduct.

There's a lot of wasted space in the NRC campus, and this will fill some of that up nicely.

That thing is a real treat for something that didn't have to be.

Took a bike ride in the area last weekend. The site for the north campus build is all fenced off, ready for construction, but no actual progress on the build so far.

Nothing for the south campus build, but that's not expected until next spring.

Cool area to explore, north campus in particular, where you can see the heritage as a military base, with some cool WWII era buildings with curved corners. Basic as they are, they still had small flourishes.

About a month ago, there was some digging going on at the north campus site, piles of dirt. This week, they fenced off the south campus site and started digging around the edge.
