I also drove by here a few days ago, the building is absolutely massive. Lots of red brick which seems to be the norm for seniors' residences in Gatineau (see the seniors residences near Les Promenades, les Jardins Notre-Dame on St-Joseph/Amherst).

I'm surprised it wasn't built as a 20 storey tower.. probably a lot of people would have complained.

There were already some nearby residences complaining last year about the new building because of view issues I think even if it was only seven floors.

I don’t think there any reason to panic. Gatineau is not going to become the next Florida-style retirement haven. Most of these people moving into the new retirement residences are people who are already here in Gatineau, and the builders are just catering to the demographic.

Statistically speaking, Gatineau is one of the “youngest” cities in Québec (if not THE youngest) and is actually slightly “younger” than Ottawa even.

I have done some consulting for a retirement home developer who are building/expanding in Ottawa and eastern Ontario and there seems to be a big market for retirement homes these days. These places aren't cheap and there is a lot of competition between the various owners. The little family run retirement homes are getting squeezed out of the market.

If you check out the Amica on Westboro site, they market it like a 'luxury cruise ship'. Probably would be cheaper to live on a cruise ship, and warmer.

Median age in Gatineau is 38.2. It’s 38.4 in Ottawa.

Keep in mind that there the baby boom is reaching that age. I expect a lot more of this to come. Also look for your local community pool to be dominated by aquaerobics, lawn bowling pitches to start popping up, and (hopefully) the development of slow moving vehicle lanes.
