They are generally the kind of people who enjoy working and would go stir crazy if they had no work to do so they usually keep working in their company even if they "retire". I agree with most of what you said. It really is a mixed bag and is based on the effort & talent of the individual. And cash is a great partner.
What you said above is really true, I stopped short of saying that many do it until the very end. It can be a life long passion.
