NY Lawmakers approve seven vegas-style casinos

While an amendment to the New York State Constitution is never a sure thing, lawmakers have gotten the ball rolling to allow casino style gambling in the Empire State.

Lawmakers and the Governor both agree on Vegas-style casinos, and last night the legislature approved a measure to allow seven of these casinos in as yet undetermined sites.

The economic impact is said to be $3.3 billion a year. Saratoga is already betting it will be chosen, announcing a $40 million dollar expansion in anticipation of adding to the $150 million already wagered there on electronic slots every year.

And They’re Off: Battle For Casinos Begins

State lawmakers have passed the first of two constitutional amendments to legalize casino gaming in New York, but people can start taking odds on where they would located......the allotment of casinos leaves unanswered questions about where they would sited and whether the state’s nine racetracks with video-lottery terminals would be part of the casino expansion.

“We haven’t had any discussions about where, who, how –- so I don’t think there should be any assumptions, whatsoever,” Cuomo told reporters. “The number has nothing to do anything except a regional distribution, comparability to other states, and a number that was not overly daunting for our ability to manage, supervise, regulate.”

Cuomo said he would expect that the casinos would be spread across the state, saying, “We want to create destination locations that are not just casinos.” Cuomo suggested a potential bidding process for the gaming licenses. He said his only objection -– one shared by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan -– would be putting a casino in Manhattan.
