ನದಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕೆರೆ ಮೀನುಗಳ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆಗಾಗಿ “ಮತ್ಸ್ಯಧಾಮ’ ಯೋಜನೆ ಮಾಡಲಿದ್ದು ಹೆಬ್ರಿಯ ಸೀತಾನದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾರಿಯಾಗಲಿದೆ. ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ಗಳಂತೆಯೇ ಎಲ್ಲ ನಗರಾಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸಮಿತಿ ರಚನೆಯಾಗಬೆಕಿದ್ದು ಜೀವವೈವಿಧ್ಯ ಕಾನೂನು ಉಲ್ಲಂಘನೆ ಮಾಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಜೈಲು ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ವಿಧಿಸುವ ಕಾನೂನು ಇದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಉಪ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ವಿಶೇಷಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಆಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಆಶೀಸರ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಕೊಲ್ಲೂರಿನ ಸೌಪರ್ಣಿಕಾ ನದಿಯ ಮಲಿನತೆಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಮತ್ಸ್ಯ ಸಂತತಿ ನಾಶಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಇಲಾಖೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಮನ್ವಯ ಸಾಧಿಸಿ ಕಾನೂನು ಚೌಕಟ್ಟಿನ ಒಳಗೆ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಪರಿಹಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು ಎಂದರು.

Discussion on sustainable development of Mattu Gulla

It (Manipal Institute of Management (MIM)) would also organise a seminar on “Sustainable development and roadmap for the future of Udupi Jasmine” in association with the Sri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) at Bantakal on February 28.

There was potential to grow Mattu Gulla in another 140 acres of land which was mostly lying fallow.

Plans are also being drawn up to check salt water intrusion in land where Mattu Gulla was being grown and discussions would be held with the Minor Irrigation Department in this matter, he (Harish G. Joshi, coordinator, Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, MIM) said.

“We are also thinking of developing a model farm on Mattu Gulla cultivation on one or 1.5 acres of land where demonstration on its cultivation can be given,” he said. The government was planning to bring Udupi Jasmine cultivators under a Farmer Producers Organisation, Mr. Joshi said.

Efforts on to increase area under Mattu Gulla cultivation

Presently, Mattu Gulla is cultivated in about 225 acres of land in these villages, but there is a potential to cultivate it in another 140 acres of land, which is mostly fallow. Since the cultivation of Mattu Gulla is profitable, it is expected to help farmers increase their income.

Model farm planned

Plans are on to set up a model farm to demonstrate the cultivation of Mattu Gulla in about an acre of land at Mattu village to cater to a large number of researchers and tourists. Many researchers from other countries too are coming to study the vegetable.

“We have identified three pieces of land for the model farm near the backwaters of Mattu, but are yet to finalise the land. Since the Mattu beach is nearby, it will also help tourists. We will be submitting a project on the model farm to NABARD, which could be a potential funding agency, and we can also take the support of private donors if more funds are necessary,” said Mr. Joshi.

Udupi Mallige, also known as Shankarpura Mallige, is cultivated by about 7,000 growers in Shankarpura, Shirva, Innanje, Bantakal, Katapady and surrounding areas in Udupi district. According to the crop survey done in 2018-19, Udupi Mallige is grown on 116 hectares in Udupi, and its production is estimated at 863.55 tonnes, valued at ₹12.09 crore.

The FPO wil get ₹35 lakh as formation cost, ₹15 lakh as working capital, ₹22.5 lakh for machinery, amd ₹10 lakh equity grant from the Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium. The growers will get cold storage facility and godowns under the FPO.

Neera to reach consumers as ‘Kalparasa’ shortly

He (District BKS (Bharatiya Kissan Sangha) General Secretary Satyanarayana Udupa) said, "There are plans to collect Neera on the lines of milk procurement by DKMUL (Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited). BKS has 54 cocount societies and three coconut federations with 4,820 farmers as members. The Neera collected from each society will be processed in our unit before releasing it to the market."

He said a farmer who collects Neera from eight trees can earn up to Rs 2.40 lakh annually. Even after collecting Neera, the trees bear more than 50% of coconuts. The project will create 2,500 jobs in the region, he stressed. There are plans to release sugar, honey, chocolate and ice creams made from Neera, Udupa added.

Udupi farmers take the initiative to produce and market neera

Farmers in Udupi district have formed the Udupi Kalprasa Coconut and All Spices Producer Company and plan to start production of neera in a couple of months to add to their income.

Guruprasad, Assistant Director of Horticulture, said that the department had already given its consent letter to the company which had been forwarded to the Excise Department for giving in-principle licence.

“After the nod from the Excise Department, the company will have to work as per the guidelines of the District Neera Committee. Since it is a non-alcoholic beverage, a cold-storage chain will have to be maintained from its collection to its sale,” he said.

In the second phase, the company will expand and a bigger building will be constructed by November, and then produce items such as neera sugar, neera honey, neera chocolate and neera vinegar. “Our total project is estimated at about ₹ 4.5 crore,” Mr. Udupa said.

How about producing neera powder mixed with lime juice powder (can mix with lime juice before dehydration of neera), asfoetida, turmeric etc. Palm jaggery has 29 mg of magnesium (much higer than jaggery which is 16 mg) which is good for digestion and then other contents are added which are good for digestion. The powder-mix can be added to water and drank before food with some time gap. Even 'amla candy' prepared with palm jaggery is good for digestion. Or gooseberry can be dipped in neera syrup with turmeric, asfoetida etc powders.

Whether anyone is thinking of 'jackfruit juice vinegar' or 'jackfruit seeds vinegar' or 'jackfruit rags vinegar' 1 2? What about 'pomelo vinegar' 1? Before venturing into these we need to study side effects.

In a bid to train youth and farmers in tapping neera, the Udupi Kalparasa Coconut and All Spices Farmer Producer Company is setting up a model farm in the district.

The objective of this company is to help the coconut farmers of district by manufacturing neera, and products, such as sugar, honey, chocolate, made out of neera, and also coconut oil and coconut milk.

“We will start manufacturing neera, neera sugar and neera honey by this October. We will be selling them at three outlets – Udupi, Kundapur and Japti – in the district. Neera will be sold as a health drink in 200ml bottles,” Satyanarayana Udupa, chairman of the company, told The Hindu.

ಕೆಮಿಕಲ್ ಸೆಂಟ್ನಿಂದ ಪರಿಮಳ ಬರಬಹುದೇ ವಿನಾ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗೆ ಪೂರಕವಾಗುತ್ತದೋ? ಇದು ಇಂಗಾಲಾಮ್ಲವನ್ನು ಹೊರಸೂಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಪದ್ಧತಿ ಇದಲ್ಲ. ಧೂಪವನ್ನು ಹಚ್ಚುವ ಬದಲು ಅಗರ್ಬತ್ತಿ ಕ್ರಮ ಚಾಲ್ತಿಗೆ ಬಂತು. ನಾವು ಧೂಪವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಆಮ್ಲಜನಕವನ್ನು ಉತ್ಪಾದಿಸಿ ಜೀವಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಉಪಕಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದಾಗಿಯೇ ಧೂಪ-ದೀಪ-ನೈವೇದ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ರೂಢಿಗೆ ಬಂತು. ಹಿಂದೆ ಧೂಪದ ಮರಗಳೇ ಸಾಲುಮರಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದವು. ಇದರ ತೊಗಟೆಯಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಮೇಣ, ದೇಸೀ ಹಸುಗಳ ಗೋಮಯ, ಭದ್ರಮುಷ್ಟಿ, ತುಪ್ಪವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ಧೂಪದ ಕಡ್ಡಿಯನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಇದನ್ನು ನಾವು ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ತರಬೇತಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ತಯಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

For, Udupi-based Bell-O-Seal Valves Pvt. Ltd., an MSME, catered to the entire requirement of isolation valves and 3-valve manifolds of Kakrapar-3 under Make in India programme. These valves were used to shut off flow in high pressure heavy water instrument lines in nuclear power stations and were manufactured for the first time in the country by Bell-O-Seal as acknowledged by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL).

Located near Santhekatte, off Udupi, Bell-O-Seal employs around 400 people in its two units.
