Porsche AG joint assembly plant in Kedah establishes long-term presence in the Asean region: MITI

KUALA LUMPUR: Porsche AG's decision to locate its production facility in Kedah demonstrated the German sports car manufacturer's commitment to establishing a long-term presence in the Asean region.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the project is embedded in a comprehensive growth initiative launched in 2018 and reflects Porsche's trust in Malaysia's strong position as the preferred manufacturing hub for globally renowned automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Azmin said Porsche's strategic decision embodied its confidence in Malaysia's conducive ecosystem and the country's strength to support its long-term growth.

To recap, Porsche AG and Sime Darby Bhd will jointly set up a production facility in Kedah, marking the first local assembly outside of Europe in more than 70 years.

Azmin said the partnership would lead to the creation of high-quality jobs and niche technology capabilities, solidifying Malaysia's National Investment Aspirations (NIA).

Porsche strongly believes Malaysia is an ideal gateway for the ASEAN market despite a challenging global economic landscape.

"We are very pleased to welcome Porsche to Malaysia, and the ministry as well as its agency, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), will continue to deliver our best in facilitating their endeavours here," he said.

Azmin said the government would ensure a conducive environment for foreign industry leaders to do business in Malaysia through fiscal and non-fiscal incentives coupled with Malaysia's readiness to provide high-skilled talents and capable technology partners.

Porsche specialises in high-performance sports cars, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and sedans. The brand is famous for its reputation as a high-performance car manufacturer that demands a state of the art technology and precision engineering.
