I think people might be more understanding if he had a tough upbringing, but he was a suburban kid whose parents were educated professionals. I mean, his dad was a university professor. He should have known better.
But that said, from what I can see, he has grown up. The questionable behaviour appears to be in his past so I am not terribly concerned by it.
