Historically, the Los Angeles area has not been the super liberal place it's known as today. LA County supported Proposition 8 (by a slim margin, but still) which banned gay marriage in California
in 2008. It has taken a significant shift to the left in the past decade+, as has Orange County, but Southern CA/Greater LA has always been way more conservative than the Bay Area.
