Napoli - Italy's Delicious Mess
Napoli is fascinating. Despite having what amounts to one of the worst reputations in Europe as a place to spend time, I found it to be an extremely complex, dynamic, and memorable place. My family and I spent October on the Amalfi Coast and used Naples as a jumping point to other locales. Combined with other trips, I’ve now been there five brief times.
I’m not presenting this as some sort of comprehensive look at the city, quite honestly I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. We were always told by everyone, including my wife’s local family, that Naples was a total shithole. This time we decided to spend just a bit more time there, and while the city does seem to have some issues, there are some amazing areas. My wife and I both decided that next time we would spend more than just a night at a time (which proved hard for exploring extensively with the kids).
A city with coastal and hilltop castles, an extensive waterfront, thousands of years of developed history, and one of the most famous volcanos on earth. Not to mention the city’s proximity to Ischia, Sorrento, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. The Metro is fairly extensive and covers most of the city, even out as far as Sorrento.

In the early 1990’s, the city decided to build out an extensive office district on the eastern side of the city near Garabaldi and Napoli Centrale Stations. It was master planned by Kenzo Tange and a number of decent sized towers were built by 1995, including what was, at the time, the tallest in Italy. I unfortunately have yet to be able to really explore this district, but I know that there is a beautiful modern church in the center.

Quartieri Spagnoli, a dense, chaotic, jumble of great restaurants, shops, and housing. Amazing people watching and even better pizza. My kids are totally ruined for pizza now…as am I…
