Yeah, it's definitely going to be a motif associated with this era in architecture. It's a weird design decision.
I think it evolved from museums and civic buildings where the "stacked boxes" concept made sense for the plan, for views, or for solar reasons.
It makes a lot less contextual sense for taller buildings, imo.
I think architects think it makes the building look "dynamic" but it often just looks messy.
