First, I absolutely hate to see yet another anchor of Erie's industrial physical form meet the wrecking ball. Century-plus-old brick factory architecture is/was Erie's dominant vernacular... and has disappeared at a rapid rate in the past 20 years... usually with NOTHING or PARKING LOTS built in its place.

Second, this building complex has been neglected for many decades and are tough to reuse in a city llike Erie. But let's hope this property is actually redeveloped with buildings like the news story states... and does not become another downtown car dealership lot... like the ever-expanding Hallman lots over the Koehler Brewing properties and up and down State and Peach Streets.

Tina Mengine, CEO of the Erie County Redevelopment Authority, knows a little about the history of the former Erie Malleable Iron property on West 12th Street, which the authority purchased recently for $375,000.

She also has some thoughts about the future of the 5.6-acre property, where she hopes to eliminate blighted structures and replace them with new buildings.
