Work Underway On $802M Signature Bridge, Double-Deck Highway

The clock is about to start ticking for the contractor working on the $802 million Signature Bridge project, which also includes double decking a portion of the 836 highway.

Under the terms of a design-build contract, the contractor has 4 years to complete the project, excluding holidays, weather, special events, and any unforeseen circumstances. According to Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Oscar Gonzalez, the clock begins ticking on October 29.

Lane closures were already underway as of last week to allow for surveys and soil borings, in order to gather information for bridge foundation design.

Over the next six months, the contractor expects to complete the following tasks:

Utility relocations
Surveying and Geotechnical Exploration-Test piles
Continue to develop roadway and bridge plans
Construction along I-95 in the median and begin concrete replacement
Widening SR 836 in preparation for double-decking
Construction of the I-395 bridge foundations
The Design Build Team will also be working on design plan submittals and developing a construction schedule during this time.

Completion is expected in Fall of 2023, Gonzalez said.
