Jefferson was a great, but flawed, man, often contradicting himself (all men are created equal, but a slaveowner). He also said he would prefer “newspapers without government” to “government without newspapers." Jefferson was known to regularly personally attack any newspaper that dared disagree with his policies. Those quotes are likely examples.
