In the middle of Western Sydney, 23km from central Sydney and 32km from Penrith, which is the fringe of sprawl, is Parramatta. Parramatta is a CBD in it's own right, and is the heart of the Western Suburbs. It is on the Parramatta River, which eventually becomes Sydney Harbour.
Western Sydney has significantly lower average incomes than Eastern Sydney and has a large immigrant population. In fact only 30% of the residents of Parramatta were born in Australia, with the two largest countries of origin being India and China. Western Sydney is wonderfully diverse and is a great example of Australia's multiculturalism.
