Owner of Merchandise Mart building downtown plots renovation, rebranding

The owner of the Merchandise Mart building on Washington Avenue says it has kicked off a renovation and rebranding of the downtown St. Louis building.
Milwaukee-based Mandel Group Inc., which acquired the Merchandise Mart building in late 2016, says it has rebranded the property as The Lofts at 1 Thousand and plans to upgrade the entry, lobby and office as well as create new amenities areas like a coworking space, a clubroom, rooftop terrace and "dog run." The company declined to disclose how much they plan to invest in the building, at 1000 Washington Ave., but city records show the Mandel Group received a construction permit valued at $650,000.
The firm has tapped E.M. Harris Construction Co. as the general contractor, and Engberg Anderson as the design architect. Renovations are expected to wrap up in March.
