Old Slidell mall could become site of giant government finance agency

North Shore Square, the moribund Slidell mall that has struggled to find new life, is one of three sites being considered to house the National Finance Center, which handles payroll for a myriad of federal agencies, Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer has confirmed.
Chris Masingill, CEO of the Srt. Tammany Development District, said that he has ben told the move could bring about 1,000 jobs to the the site and breathe new life into an area that has seen an exodus of retailers and restaurants.
North Shore Square to close interior mall space by summer, but open-air stores coming soon

In July, North Shore Square's owners, Morguard Corp., closed down the interior portion of the mall. A nearby restaurant, Zea, also closed, citing the loss of mall traffic.

Cromer said he had learned months ago that the National Finance Center, which operates under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was going to relocate from the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans East. The agency's building there was damaged by a tornado in 2017 and repairs were ruled out because it contained asbestos, he said.
