A West Michigan pillar readies for a $75 million expansion

Quote:
The Grand Rapids Public Museum will begin a multi-year, $75 million project this spring to make more room for school groups and improve accessibility, specifically along the Grand River — itself the centerpiece of a citywide effort to activate Grand Rapids' downtown core.

The city-owned museum founded in 1854 will fund its expansion in part with an $11 million earmark in the 2023 state budget. Kent County also designated $1 million to the museum from its American Rescue Plan Act allocation in December, and the The Right Place in September allocated an $800,000 ARPA placemaking grant to the museum.

Dale Robertson, president and CEO of the museum since 2008, said the last time GRPM was significantly updated was around 2016, when it renovated its second and fourth floors to add exhibit, office and school group space.
