What should be the criteria for closing a office? They could have closed offices which are at lesser distances (and generating lesser income) to each other than offices at far off distances generating more income. Why the parched city needs so many IT offices? Why instead of closing extra IT offices there and its shadow city (which is anyway earning less than Mangaluru office) they are closing Mangaluru office which is far away? Why should the IT offices in the parched city should serve so many districts even far away from it?

Coastal districts buck the trend

In a marked departure, Covid-19 has not penetrated much in rural areas of the coastal region. Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, but the rural areas and small towns of the region have not been affected much and it is mostly the district headquarters of Mangaluru and Udupi which are badly hit.

Over 70 per cent of the cases reported so far in Dakshina Kannada are from Mangaluru city. Of the 12,100-odd cases reported so far, 8,500 cases are from Mangaluru, 2,000 from Bantwal, 500 from Belthangady, 750 from Puttur and 200 from Sullia. Sources in the health department said the rural parts in the coastal region are not affected much because of the widely dispersed villages where human-to-human contact is minimum, unlike in other parts of the state that have nucleated villages with houses located close to each other. Deputy Commissioner K.V. Rajendra told The Hindu that RT-PCR test, the gold standard for detection of COVID-19, is being held at laboratories of the Government Wenlock Hospital and at eight private medical colleges. “Since the last one week, an average of 3,000 RT-PCR tests are being conducted a day,” he said and added that these results were made available within 24 hours.

Rapid antigen tests too are being carried out, while action has been taken to procure an additional 60,000 rapid antigen testing kits. As many as 51 mobile testing units are being put to optimal use, of which 30 are functioning in Mangaluru, where COVID-19 cases are high.
