Cantilevering H Hotel W39 Remains On Hold At 58 West 39th Street In Midtown

Quote:
Work still appears stalled on H Hotel W39, a 447-foot-tall hotel at 58 West 39th Street in Midtown. Designed by Peter F. Poon Architects and developed by Wei Hong Hu of H Hotel LLC, the 29-story building is set to feature a radical design with a dramatic cantilever giving way to a tapered glass dome.

Recent photos show that construction at the site, located one block south of Bryant Park between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, is at about the same state as in our last visit in late May. The reinforced concrete superstructure currently sits around the third story and is laden with orange netting, steel rebar, and wooden formwork. It’s unclear what is causing the delay in construction progress.

58 West 39th Street is planned to yield 41,500 square feet of commercial space, 65 hotel rooms, meeting rooms, a fitness center, and a hotel lobby. The lower portion features a conventional massing before the cantilever around the midpoint, above which the structure cuts a very distinctive profile with rounded glass corners culminating in a gently tapered pinnacle. The entire envelope consists of a reflective glass curtain. The top floors are likely to provide views of Bryant Park and the Midtown skyline, and the project would certainly stand out as an ultra-modern addition to the surrounding historic buildings like the American Radiator Building at 40 West 40th Street, which is directly to the north.
