The thoughtless, careless destruction of this iconic structure was and is a huge loss for LA. It was as if Mae West and Liberace had their own building....it was screaming for attention to itself. It lived in its own little niche.
It was really gaudy in some respect. I would ask the architect, Stiles Clements, "What were you thinking?" He thought the black facade symbolized black oil. How that translates from oil to a building exterior is beyond me. |
It was magnificent. At least DTLA still has Eastern Columbia and a few others. See my idea above about building a much taller version in time for the 100th birthday of the original Richfield (finished in 1928) and in time for the 2028 Olympics. Any noirish billionaires here to build it?
