Construction fencing moves in for Atlanta's tallest building in ages
Rockefeller Group confirms construction activity at site of 1072 West Peachtree skyscraper

With each passing month, Atlanta’s tallest new development proposal in decades is looking like more and more of a sure bet.

Representatives with Manhattan-based Rockefeller Group confirmed to Urbanize Atlanta on Thursday that worker activity spotted around the site of a planned 60-story skyrise on West Peachtree Street is what it seems to be. Questions regarding a potential groundbreaking weren’t addressed.

“We can confirm that construction fencing is currently being installed around 1072 West Peachtree,” reps wrote in an email reply. “We look forward to sharing more updates soon."

It’s the most concrete evidence to date the mixed-use tower is officially moving forward—in a section of central Midtown near the Connector that’s currently mobbed with construction cranes and unrelated development activity.

Set on the southwest corner of West Peachtree and 12th streets, the Rockefeller project’s height would reshape Midtown’s skyline, especially when viewed from the west.
Last month, City of Atlanta Office of Buildings staff approved land development permits that allow Rockefeller to proceed with the redevelopment of a now-vacant U.S. Post Office facility at the corner of 12th Street.

That same week a promotional website for the skyscraper launched, lending a fresh perspective on how the project would fit among Midtown’s recent vertical growth. The website indicates the building will rise 60 stories (as opposed to 61 in initial plans), with designs of “monumental distinction” creating a place “that is as much active as it is restful, sophisticated as it is welcoming, and connected as it is set apart.”

The city has also granted Rockefeller permission to move forward with grading and installing new utilities, curb cuts, streetscape, and sidewalks at the 1.14-acre site where the high-rise is planned, according to permitting paperwork.
