The article you linked is ridiculous. And this coming from an adamant transit advocate. As the article states, most commuters who use this bridge are not heading towards manhattan. They are heading else where, and in case you forgot, mass transit, especially outside of the city limits, is focused on getting people to Manhattan. There is no mass transit infrastructure in place to replace the bridge. The reason why this project was funded so quickly in comparison to other projects is that not only is the bridge solely the responsibility of NY state, it is all falling apart at an alarming rate. The other trans-Hudson projects are a joint effort with NJ, and it is usually NJ that puts an end to things, not NY.
