Absolutely know what you mean. It was always geographically large, but provincial in its thinking and culture. Now there are parts outside of Center City that feel sophisticated and cool, like NoLibs/Fishtown, for example. I’ve had more than a few a friends be blown away at the reality of Philly compared to their expectation.
