I did ride the light rail south of Uptown Charlotte and there was some more interesting newer urbanism around but the eastern part of the CBD that I've seen is just utterly empty all day long.

I was in Charlotte about a year and a half ago to entertain a job offer. The South End, south of Uptown (Charlotte's downtown), has some interesting new development. Uptown has a really nice main street, but they have huge above-ground parking garages that are exposed on the block sides opposite of the main street that kill the street vibe.
