It would be a mistake to just visit KL though, which is all about modernity (eg luxury malls and shopping districts, plus 5 of the world's Top 20 tallest buildings). A general rule of equatorial SE Asia, for visitors and locals alike: daytime is for beaches and landscapes (or malls), night time for your urban exploring when everything comes alive.

KL does have a vibrant Little India though - note how quiet it is due to daytime:

The Exchange is actually way taller than the Petronas Towers but its massive roof isn't considered part of its architectural height, rather that it's a 'spire'. KL is the city along with Dubai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and NYC that's going to vie for title of most supertalls in the near future:

Other than the spectacular landscapes beyond, the UNESCO World Heritage cities of Melaka and Georgetown show off the history and culture KL misses out on.

The latter especially is a real hidden star of Asia - carpeted with historic shophouses, colonial gems, hipster joints, temples, mosques, bars, restaurants and street markets. The whole place comes alive by dusk, when the cool night brings everyone into the streets.

it's also located on a dramatic island, ringed with resorts
