Demolition Prep Underway At 15 Beekman Street In The Financial District
Quote:
Demolition prep is underway at 15 Beekman Street, a 14-story structure in the Financial District. Located by the corner of Nassau and Beekman Streets directly across from Frank Gehry’s residential skyscraper at 8 Spruce Street, the site will eventually give rise to a 27-story mixed-use tower addressed as 126-132 Nassau Street. SL Green Realty is listed as the owner behind the applications for the future 338-foot-tall Pace University academic center and dormitory. Manish Chadha of Ismael Leyva Architects is listed as the architect of record.
Recent photos show the state of preparation for demolition. It appears that an adjacent four-story corner structure will also be razed in addition to 15 Beekman Street.
The low-rise building stands enveloped in scaffolding and black netting. The taller structure will likely receive the same treatment over the coming weeks.15 Beekman Street features a symmetrical northern elevation that starts off with three arched windows surrounded by stone work, columns, and keystones, while the grid of windows above is surrounded by a warm-colored masonry façade with horizontally striped pattern of two shades of sand-colored bricks.
Plans call for 213,084 square feet of newly built space, with 178,299 square feet designated for community facility space. The development will also contain classrooms, dorms, a dining facility, a library, and a learning center. The reinforced concrete-based structure will have a cellar, sub-cellar, and a 20-foot-long rear yard. The nearest subways are the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, and Z trains at the Fulton Street station.
