And it was just as abused over here. Tracking ethnicity in the Americas (including French possessions) began as a system to track slave populations. After slavery, it was used to perpetuate all types of discrimination by the government against non-whites.

The highlighted is a good point. Just because the road is very bumpy doesn't necessarily mean the road you've chosen is the wrong one.
