Should Premier Eby give Greg Kerfoot $ 40 million per season to keep Whitecaps in Van
Should Premier Eby hand over $ 40 million to Whitecaps owner Greg Kerfoot every season to keep the Vancouver Whitecaps in Vancouver ?
Or is it more important to let the Whitecaps move to Las Vegas and have enough taxpayer money left over to maintain an acceptable standard of living for British Columbians ? |

Bring the Caps into the CPL and make that league truly Canadian. We don't need no stinkin yankee league! |
Depends on what, if any, evidence there is that the team is providing $40 million or more per season in value to the province such as by increasing its profile, attracting visitors, stimulating the economy etc. Shouldn't just be based on vibes. The initial question doesn't present mention any benefits to subsidizing the team while it presents maintaining living standards as a benefit of not subsidizing it. But I'm sure the proponents of funding the team would argue that there are benefits to keeping it, while the $40 million isn't going to maintain living standards for a population of nearly 6 million people. So it would be interesting to hear a balanced breakdown of the pros and cons.

No government should be providing any money towards operating costs of any sports franchise.
Capital investment? Sure, let's talk. Operational costs - not on your life......... |

Why is this thread in the Canada section? It's about a sports team from Vancouver.

^he asks before posting his 9,000th 3D Toronto rendering in the national section…

Hey, I've seen Toronto stuff get put down by western forum members plenty of times about this topic... Cant take it when the shoe is on the other foot?

I’d be happy to make a “Should the Canadian MLS teams join the CPL?” thread lol

Not a cent of tax revenue should go to a team owned by multimillionaires/billionaires to run their team. |
Woulda been nice to see the poll merged with this thread… but I will make one for the Canada wide MLS question at a later date! lol
BC was the first province to switch to permanent DST… maybe the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club will be the first Canadian club in the MLS to leave and join the CPL! I’m sure the Vancouver Whitecaps would instantly become the most popular and successful team in the CPL if their ownership sold their franchise for $500m-1b+ and reinvested even a fraction of that into the Whitecaps as a club in CPL! There’s no reason they have to sell the branding and team name a long with the MLS franchise. Moreover, I think such a move to the CPL by the Whitecaps would put the brakes on the debate around a new world class arena for the Whitecaps, and shift the focus to the much more important stadium discussion: getting an MLB ballpark built in Vancouver. The MLS is simply not on the same level as the MLB, NHL, NBA, and NFL, and it was always a mistake for Canadian clubs to join the American MLS, since in the world of football (⚽️) the best leagues around the world are national leagues not international leagues like professional sports (sort of) in North America with a smattering of Canadian teams competing in mostly American professional sports leagues. The best thing that could ever happen for the long term development of soccer in Canada would be for a CANEXIT from the MLS to occur, which would indisputably make the CPL the top flight of professional soccer in Canada. Also wouldn’t hurt if we stopped calling it soccer, but that’s a whole other debate! lol |

If someone made a similar thread about bringing their friend to Vancouver or Calgary for their first time, it would be totally valid. Are you not interested in what people from outside your region think about your city? |

Because it’s a French Canada thread… there’s no Canada like French Canada, and there’s more to French Canada than Quebec! :notacrook: Also, the former “Quebec, the French Language, and Quebecois Identity” thread was ultimately locked, but not because it was in the “wrong section”. The conversation being discussed in this thread can and will still take place in the soccer thread in the main forum, as it’s certainly related to the topic of that thread. A link to a poll thread in the soccer thread would have probably been the best way to approach this discussion, but whatever? I certainly find this to be an interesting subject and I hope that the Whitecaps ownership sell their MLS franchise and have the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club join the CPL! :D. What a tremendous development for the CPL that could be… and what better time to announce it than before Vancouver hosts the World Cup! |
Why was my Poll Closed / Locked ?
