In what they tout as the largest-ever private investment on the city's West Side, Chicago Bulls President and CEO Michael Reinsdorf and Chicago Blackhawks Chairman Danny Wirtz today will announce their vision for the 1901 Project, a wide-ranging, 10-year redevelopment of the parking lots that encircle the stadium their families jointly own at 1901 W. Madison St. and other nearby sites they control.

Future phases of the development include even more ambitious buildings, though the sequencing of when specific projects would move ahead has yet to be determined, Savarise said. Renderings show plans for residential buildings and park space on lots north of the stadium near the Westhaven Park Apartments and higher density residential buildings northeast of the arena. United Center executives said the entire megaproject could include between 5,000 and 6,000 new residential units, and that 20% of them will be designated affordable units.

Finally! It has been so obvious that these parking lots needed to be redeveloped for the past 20+ years. The L runs right next to it. It's a wonder this took so long, but better late than never.

Lots of other key details too. A 150-180 key hotel, up to 6,000 new residential units (20% affordable) and talks for a new pink line station.

Woah. I was not expecting this in my lifetime!

I'm a little skeptical of adding yet another new music venue, but it sounds like it fills a neglected niche in market.

It would be nice if at least some of the parking could go underground so the area could get a little at-grade green space instead of relying entirely privately controlled "rooftop parks."

A Pink Line stop is a must. Looking forward to seeing more renderings.

Wow, this plus the IMD's upzoning to C-5 will push the skyline to Damen by the end of the decade. Chicago's central area always grows faster than anyone can imagine.

This is absolutely fantastic. The building boom of Fulton Market/West Loop has long been hampered in to the west by the blight created by these eyesore parking lots. With those now slated to bite the dust, it can help propel and turbocharge redevelopment westward along the Green (and to a lesser extent the Blue) Line, much in the same fashion several decades ago when redevelopment and investment tracked northwest along the Blue line from the Loop to Wicker Park, Logan Square, etc.

Super excited for a Madison Pink Line stop as well, been long overdue!

Awesome news. As part of the plan I wonder (and hope) that a Pink Line station with an enclosed elevated pedway to the UC will be part of the deal. That alone would probably cost northward of 200mill. Still, if Wirtz/JR really plan to make even half of these plans come true I think it would be worth the investment.

I highly suspect that Reinsdorf is now putting all of his eggs into this basket, knowing that he won't get what he wants for a new Sox Park at the 78. Also, fuck him.
