This may be the Medallion Dev project. Looks very good and only one phase of the entire hospital lands redevelopment. Hopefully the digging starts soon as all the phases for entire project will likely take 10+ years to complete.

Renderings look amazing, and reasonable development given the hospital that use to be there. Unfortunately already saw on the news some SOHO NIMBYs are already pooh poohing the design. They feel it Ddoesn't fit in to the existing neighbourhood, and that it's too big...

lol, it's only slightly taller then what was their before. If anything it should be taller considering how close it's to the core and riverfront.

Totally agree. Disappointed the towers in this phase are not taller. Hopefully the other phases will bring significantly taller towers like 30 storey plus.

This is supposed to be a gateway development to downtown and make a statement. Overlooking the river valley and parklands.

Build it higher. Any Nimbys who complain about shadows should be given a one way ticket out of town.

19 and 23 storeys is more than double and almost triple the height of the hospital at its highest point.

That said, there really shouldn’t be a lot of neighbourhood opposition. Sure there are a couple houses right by that corner, but it’s pretty removed from the rest of the area. There isn’t a ton of residential right around the site. The block to the north is vacant hospital buildings, to the east is mostly park with some houses on South, and the block to the northeast has a parking lot at the closest end, with 2 smaller apartment buildings and a church and school behind. I don’t think residents in those 2 buildings can say anything since I’m sure 6 and 7 storey buildings supposedly didn’t fit the single family home nature of the neighbourhood either when they were proposed. The locals are probably pretty spoiled by the lack of traffic now but this complex will generate a lot less traffic than the hospital did as well.

If I lived in this area I would be all for it. This isn't the best neighborhood in the city. These project will only do good for this neighborhood.

^^^ agreed, if I lived in the area I would be welcoming the development as it will bring more attention to the area and hopefully allow it to become a more desirable place to live for younger families who can come and put some money into the properties. In the end everyone will benefit

If they had 2 brain cells to share amongst the lot of them they would be begging for 25-40+ storey towers thru out the entire area. Maybe they would then have the density to warrant getting other businesses like a grocery store. If anyone of them plays the food desert card they will get zero sympathy.

If this was 10 stories these people would still complain. Let's get this built.

The urban design peer review panel also is recommending a shorter building and not so fat of a design and adding row housing. I do agree that the building looks kind of fat.

There was a community planning session last night.

One of the attendees was opposed to the development because it would change the feel of being in the country in the downtown.

I love the comments about it making traffic busy there. Umm, there were thousands of people working or coming and going from the hospital and surrounding medical buildings on a daily basis. A couple apartment buildings and a few shops are not going to remotely compare to that. Do these people think the city is just going to let a subdivision go in there?

I've read the SOHO community association is against the project. However there seems to a fair amount of SOHO residents who feel the association is the directors using the association to express their personal opinions rather than a consensus of thr community as a whole. The area is zoned it be high density residential, and they can only it nitpick over a 2 or 3 extra floors ?!

Let's hope sanity wins the day for a change, get a much needed development going!

Hopefully other residents in the area come out to support the project and even ask for more height. There should be progressively taller buildings as you move west towards Wellington as the rest of these lands get built out.

Sounds like this SOHO group is out of touch with the rest of the residents. Maybe time for it to disappear or for the members to be replaced.
