Suggest a location for a new HRM Police HQ
HRM Police need a new police headquarters : https://www.halifax.ca/sites/default/fil...ommittees-commissions/180416bopc911a.pdf
Peninsula Halifax or Dartmouth. I suggest Penhorn Mall redevelopment or WDC-1, corner of King and Alderney. |

I can't imagine building the new police HQ anyplace other than in the downtown area close to the law courts. We're planning a new $40M Codiac RCMP HQ in Moncton, to be opened about 2021, and the Mounties were adamant that it be located no more than a couple of blocks from the law courts....... |
There is talk of building a new court building, why not build them together?
|
I'd be surprised to see Dartmouth. The Burnside HQ is quite new so I don't see them closing it, yet I also don't see them having two HQs on that side of the harbour.

Old RCMP HQ site, Bayers Rd @ Oxford?

Cogswell seems like a good opportunity to get a new station and law courts in close proximity. A more northerly location would still leave prime land available for development, and then in addition the current location of the police station would be available for development.
If it means that we could get rid of the concrete bunker that is the law courts on Upper Water St. and redevelop that prime waterfront land, that would definitely be a bonus. I would be happy to see it go. |
I think the law courts and police station should be combined wherever they go. I can't wait to see the old Law Courts building demolished. It is an ugly eyesore, just a concrete box. I also, think they should be both downtown.

Cogswell lands, not even up for debate. Already city owned, would place a building in the heart of the development so it's not a wasteland of empty lots when complete, and kickstart things. Plus, this will be the new centre of the city, they should be close for obvious reasons.

Kempt Rd/Young St area - there are 2 Tim Hortons on that corner
Should be somewhere where you don't need to get another parking ticket when paying a parking ticket - lots of parkiing |

Jokingly I think that Bayers Lake is the ideal location. All the cool kids are moving out there.
I also agree that there is no need to have another Dartmouth side location. I'm liking the idea of the Young/Kempt area as well. |
With regards as to locations and whether to have an additional location in Dartmouth, it would depend on which model was selected, as outlined on page 12 of the document that Colin linked in his first post.
For example, if Model B, Fully Centralized was selected it would be irrelevant where the current facilities are located as all operations would now be conducted out of one facility. In this case, the Penhorn site could make sense as it is located near a major artery (the 111) and there is a lot of space available on that site. The document does specify "on Halifax side" though. All said, I still think the Cogswell lands would be the best location. |
The RCMP vacated their former site at Bayers and Oxford so that might be in play.
